Weekly
Rant
By: Blood
September 25, 2001
With
the recent events which took place on September
11th, I wanted to veer off course with this weeks
rant. Last week I didn't write one as I didn't
feel humor was really appropriate at the time and
with everyone glued to the news I felt very few
would read it. This week I wanted to write a
little about what happened, and what is happening
from my point of view, bare with me as this is
likely to be a little more somber than I usually
write, not to mention it won't have anything to do
with computers. I'll be back next week with my
take on all the hype in the computer industry but
for now I'll leave you with this.
Looking
over the course of events I am both proud and
embarrassed to be an American. I am proud at the
support and the patriotism this event has brought,
proud at how our nation has responded thus far to
what I, and many others perceive as an act of
outright war. On the reverse I am embarrassed
because it cost the lives of probably 7000 of our
brethren for us to remember we are a free people,
and to awaken our patriotism. It cost us 7000
lives to have us put aside the petty bickering
over minor matters in our halls of government and
come together as a nation.
I
don't consider myself to be against world peace, I
am all for everyone getting along. I don't believe
we should go to war over every minor matter. I
don't believe American troops need to go to every
single country that is having problems. I fully
support and am pleased with the way our president
is handling this atrocity. Our nation, our soil,
our friends, our family, and our brethren were
killed in an act of war. America has stood by for
years bearing the brunt of numerous terrorist
attacks. It is time to act!
I
try to stay informed and I was appalled to see an
article speaking about people in the streets of
Washington protesting the possibility of the
United States waging a global war on terrorism.
How many more have to die before it is ok with the
peace protesters for us to go to war? War is a
terrible thing, no sane person want to fight one,
but there is a time when it is appropriate.
Diplomacy, and sanctions work fine against a
developed nation. Sanctions even have effects on
poorer nations over time. The only problem is we
are going after zealots and fanatics with ties to
many nations, these people don't care about
diplomacy or sanctions they want to see us dead..
America has taken the hits, we've turned the other
cheek, the other cheek has been hit as well. When
turning the other cheek doesn't work you can
either take a beating, or you can fight back.
Peace
is a great and noble endeavor but it only works if
all sides play by the same rules. I hope for peace
as well, and having served this nation's armed
forces in the past I hope there is little blood
shed and I hope the conflict is over quickly. Some
of those soldiers going to fight are my friends.
But fight we must, the threat posed isn't to just
New York, or Washington, if given the opportunity
every single person reading this is a potential
target by these zealots who see you and me as
enemies of their god. This wasn't the first attack
and without action on our part it won't be the
last. We need to go after those responsible, not
curtail and limit our own personal freedom to
protect ourselves.
I
wish everyone the very best, for those of you who
lost friends and family, my heart mourns with you,
I feel your pain. For those of us left we need to
stand behind our president, support our nation,
and our troops until this conflict has met it's
end.
