Checkout Frag-girlie's great review on the AK73(A)motherboard. Here’s a snip: Installation of the AK73(A) was simple because of its jumper-less design. It basically consisted of popping it in a case, plugging everything in, and booting it up... easy enough. But in case you need some guidance, AOpen has provided a poster with instructions and an online manual that is quite detailed.

CNN has posted another edition of Game Over, their weekly gaming column. This week, they look at nVidia's GeForce 4, and "nVidia's problems at keeping its latest chip a secret." Here's a snip:
For technology lovers (and I fully admit to being one), this rapid advancement of new chips is exciting. From a gamer perspective, though, it's not quite the big deal nVidia would like you to believe. Yes, the more advanced graphics are nice, but the gaming hardware and gaming software industries are out of synch. While the GeForce 4 offers some tremendous features, there won't be any games on the market utilizing those for likely a year or more. As it stands, only a small handful of games take advantage of what the GeForce 3 has to offer.
That said, there are a few titles currently in development that will push the graphical envelope. id Software's third "Doom" game, while we haven't seen much of it, has hinted at one of the largest graphical leaps in the industry's history. Meanwhile, Legend Entertainment's "Unreal II" will also demand more advanced cards to run at optimal performance.

Serious Sam: The Second Encounter Review ....

[Frag-girlie] @ 8:39 AM MST Wednesday, January 30, 2002 [Comment on news]
GameSpot UK has posted a Serious Sam: The Second Encounter review. Here's a snip:
All manner of outlandish foes mindlessly throw themselves at you in an attempt to taste your giblets. Using claws, fangs, chainsaws, rockets, balls of flame and other weapons of mutilation it's less the actual damage one hit from one foe can cause and more the amount that twenty separate enemies can inflict en masse. On anything other than the lowest 'Tourist' and 'Easy' levels Serious Sam: The Second Encounter is a strong challenge and while the new enemies in the game are entertaining, they don't change the only playing strategy that's relevant - keep pressing the fire button and keep on the move yourself. Few game engines can afford to pit you against dozens of enemies attacking all at one time, in many varieties, with ranged and close-up attacks, and varying in size from pitbull to two storey house. It remains a compliment to the so-called Serious Engine that powers The Second Encounter that it handles the workload well, even on mid-spec PCs.
Top 10 Graphics Boards for Gamers ....

In PCWorld tests, In our tests, ATI's card wasn't the fastest (that honor goes to VisionTek's Xtasy 6964 card, which is based on NVidia's GeForce3 Ti 500 graphics chip), but the Radeon edged its competitors in overall image quality.
In most test games, the VisionTek Xtasy 6964 (GeForce3 Ti 500) and Xtasy 6564 (GeForce3 Ti 200) achieved similar frame rates at all but the highest 1600 by 1200 resolutions. The VisionTek Xtasy 5864 and Gainward's GeForce2 Ti/500 (both GeForce2 Ti cards) kept up with those boards in test games at lower resolutions, but dropped farther back at the highest resolution.
Quake III Testing--and Retesting
This month's boards came with NVidia's new Detonator XP drivers, but a problem with version 1.2 of Quake III (which we've used in our testing for the past year) caused a disco-ball effect that rendered the game virtually unplayable. Luckily, this problem does not persist with the 1.3 version of Quake, so we retested all boards with that version and have incorporated those test results into our ratings. Nevertheless, other games, such as Test Drive 6, still show some image-quality problems that we attribute to the NVidia drivers.

Games by players, for players is a BBC News article talking about mods and mod-makers. Here's a snip:
Although the arrival of graphical computer games in the 1970s made it more difficult for players to create add-ons, this changed in the early 1990s with the release of Wolfenstein 3D, a shoot-'em-up which allowed fans to create new maps for the main character to roam.
This trend continued when Doom hit the market in 1993, followed by other first-person shooters such as Quake and Half-Life. These titles that let the players make a modification, or "mod", to the original game enjoy a longevity denied to those that don't.

IGI2 is feeling a little poorly at the moment (nothing critical), and we have and excellent team of doctors on standby to assist both at Codemasters and Innerloop. The Armchair Empire has posted a short preview Global Operations, Barking Dog Studios' upcoming team-based fps action game, based on a modified LithTech 2.5 engine. The game's emphasis is on co-op play as teams try to accomplish a wide variety of mission types including hostage rescue, bomb diffusing, escort and base destruction. Here's a snip:
It’s nice to see how the first person shooter has evolved over the years. While there was structure and strategy present in the early years, sadly more often then not it was nothing but chaotic run-and-gun sessions with most players taking an “every man for himself” approach (and depending on what servers you play on these day, you’re probably still experiencing it). But since then games like Rainbow Six, Land Warrior, Operation Flashpoint, and a slew of other tactics-oriented, squad based first person shooters have come along to help provide a gray matter throbbing counterpoint to the more off the wall norm of the time. Now Electronic Arts/Barking Dog has a little something of their own to contribute to the PC squad-based tactical first person shooter (now there’s a mouthful of a sub genre!), as they finish up work on Global Ops.

Here's a snip:HomeLAN - What can you tell us specifically about what Valve will put into future Half-Life updates to combat cheating?
Erik Johnson - Specifics of how things work aren't really something that we'll go into in detail, but I can give you an idea of how things will happen when we do release the update.
The first step is going to be collecting information on how many people are cheating at any given time. This will probably last about a week, so we have a good idea of the size of the cheating community. Server operators will also see this information, so they will be able to take individual action on their servers.
Once this short data collection period is over, we'll start banning cheaters.

Rick Johnson of Raven Software has updated his .plan with a progress report on the Soldier of Fortune 2 multiplayer:"We’ve been busy working on the SoF2 MP and so I’ll announce a few features, which haven’t been announced until now. The first big one is that the Random Mission Generator will be included with MP. This includes both the dynamic terrain generation technology and the BSP instantiation (buildings, walls, other pre-fab stuff). MOD makers will be able to easily create their own generation parameters in the external files, add in unique instances, etc. There’re a few other surprises in this area that I’ll hold off announcing.
The next technology that we’ve added to MP is a flexible game-type creation system. You create a simple script which defines the entire parameters of the game type. Maps, with a few minor changes, can easily support new game types. For example, we have CTF implement via this system, as well as two other game types, all of which will ship with the game. One interesting feature that has been added is the ability to purchase weapons during each mission phase. The designer places “buy” areas inside the map, and while the player (on the right team) is inside this area, you’ll be able to go to a menu to purchase weapons, ammo, armor, etc. The script can then reward money to the player based upon the various outcomes that are defined."

Here's Bob Mandel's opinion on the whole thing:The gaming community is waging a bloody battle over the most trivial of issues -- how much gore should be in computer games. The lines are clearly drawn between the two sides, with one arguing gore is perfectly acceptable and even desirable, and the other contending gore is intrinsically objectionable. Each is defending its position with unparalleled passion. This piece will expose the underbelly of the gore controversy. A recent Unreal II screenshot, that also appeared in CGW magazine, was the source of controversy regarding player shadows. Here's a statement from Mark Rein of Epic Games about the screenshot:I wanted to issue a correction about the Unreal2 "Loading..." page in CGW. On Friday it came to my attention that there was a thread on Shacknews where people were questioning the legitimacy of the image used in the CGW "Loading" page. Matthias Worch made a statement saying that it was 100% real. Unbeknownst to Matthias, it had been modified by hand-drawing shadows into the screenshot after it had been taken. Player shadows weren't working at the time so I gave the go-ahead to add them and release the modified image to CGW for their "Loading" page. This is something I am 100% responsible for and in retrospect I should not have done it - I would like to take this opportunity to apologize to our fans and gamers in general for doing this. This is not something you would expect from Epic Games and I want people to know that I was responsible for it. I have included the original screen shot on which the image was based (before shadows were added) as well as some screen shots taken this weekend using the current version of the game in which shadows are working.
Mark has provided the original, unaltered screenshot, a new screenshot of the same scene with in-game player shadows enabled, and a third screenshot also demonstrating the effect. You can grab the screenshots over on Blue's News.

Here's a taste on what they have to say about the graphics:"For sure the game is looking great and certainly the best the series has ever looked, but after seeing what Return to Castle Wolfenstein and Medal of Honor: Allied Assault can do with the engine, we've come to expect more. Perhaps it's unfair to Raven Software, but gamers have been spoiled with some fantastic games using the Quake III engine and as a result, the graphics in this game do not seem as impressive as they once did. Again, the game is looking very good, but lately we've been seeing some great stuff."

HomeLan has posted an interview with 2015's President, Tom Kudirka, where they talk about the recently released Medal of Honor: Allied Assault. Here's a snip:HomeLAN - Obviously the game has a big history on the Playstation console and the E3 demo blew everyone away who got to see it. How much pressure did the team feel as they tried to live up to the large expectations of the game?
Tom Kudirka - We knew we had a hot demo to show off at E3, but we had no idea our game would generate that much attention. The reaction at E3 did add some pressure but I also believe it drove us to our maximum potential.

Jolt.co.uk has posted a KP 2 interview where they catch up {NeW}Fnlou to talk about this upcoming mod for Kingpin: Life of Crime. Here's a nibblet:Other than maps and weapons, what else can we expect in Kingpin 2? (gametypes?, player models? Vehicles? In-game server scan? That kinda thing)?
The KP2 Mod was envisioned as an "enhanced" KP deathmatch experience. In other words, I'm not really a bagman player and I'm not the cooperative type. I just wanna kill everything I see in the server hehehe. When the CRASH MOD came out, I LOVED the weather effects and the new weapons, but I didn't care for the "CounterStrike" style of play and I missed the default cursing (taunts). I approached Tunnleram about producing a MOD that had what I loved about CRASH and nothing I didn't such as "mission goals", dying once and having to wait till game is over to play again, only being able to play teams and not FFA, etc etc...... He passed. I then posted a request on a KP forum for a coder to make this happen and Cashmoney took up the challenge. I then met Syl^cs on another forum and asked him if he would make new weapons to which he agreed. And finally, I put out the call for mappers to make us some playing fields and finally we are on the home stretch. The weather and breakables DO add a bit of lag, so there will not likely be vehicles, but you WILL be able to play straight FFA Deathmatch or TEAM deathmatch ala Nikki's and Dragons.

MGON has posted an updated preview of Valve Software's multiplayer team-based game, Team Fortress 2. Here's a snip from their intro:"And this is where things begin to get a little fuzzy. Sometime around the release of TF 1.5 and the first non-beta versions of Counterstrike, Team Fortress 2 fell off the map entirely. Many people suspected the game had been cancelled. I, however, believe the company went through a drastic change in business practice in response to the phenomenal success of Counterstrike. Early in Half-Life's life span, Valve chose to invest in the concept of the mod, a piece of add-on software created by users rather than professional game developers. This requires very few resources from the original developer and greatly enhances the value of the product. Valve created mod-browser feature (described earlier) and began consulting with mod developers in order to provide them with the technical information needed to make their work shine. The company even began organizing annual mod expos to let amateur designers show off their wares. It seems Valve's investment paid off. A team-oriented mod known as Counterstrike broke onto the scene and quickly became the most successful on-line action game ever created."

Lucas Arts and Raven Software's Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast's official forums had some action this morning with Kenn Hoekstra, Raven's Project Administrator and Director of Support Services, posting on the forums clearing up some details that German PC Action Magazine published that were inaccurate. Here's what Kenn had to say:I just want everyone to know that there are "over" 20 levels and "over" 10 weapons. Keep in mind, too, that 64 players is the theoretical limit of players in Quake 3, assuming everyone has uber hardware to run the server and the bandwidth to support it. I think 32 players is a more reasonable estimate and I think that in most games 16 or 24 is more realistic/practical.
Thought I'd give everyone a "heads up."
Have a great weekend, guys and gals!

Videogame Industry to Follow with Newly Adopted Standard for PC GamesREDWOOD CITY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 17, 2002--Electronic Arts (Nasdaq:ERTS - news) will roll out its PC games in new standard-sized boxes next week with the debut of EA's highly anticipated Medal of Honor Allied Assault(TM). The new industry packaging requires less space on retail shelves which allows for more inventory. It's also environmentally friendly.
You can read the whole release here.
Recently the Interactive Developers Software Association (IDSA) recommended a smaller, standardized PC box for educational and entertainment computer software products. As the industry leader, EA is at the forefront of implementing the new packaging standards.
Following the lead of the Interactive Entertainment Merchant Association (IEMA), the IDSA recommends the standardized size of 5.25``W, 7.5''H, 1``D, a package design with an established history in electronic media, including console video game and DVD packaging.
``We're really looking forward to the uniform appearance that the new, standardized PC boxes will give our stores,'' said Jerry Madaio, vice president of PC merchandise for Electronics Boutique. ``Having many more PC titles faced outward, showing more of the box art, is a real advantage for our shoppers.''

DreamCatcher Acquires 3D PC Blast-Fest GORE by 4D Rulers
Toronto, Ontario (January 16, 2002) DreamCatcher, a fast-growing publisher of PC and console software entertainment, is pleased to announce their acquisition of the worldwide rights to GORE, an action-packed PC game developed by 4D Rulers. Gore is a 3D first-person shooter that lives up to its name with its frenzied, hard-core action and smart AI. A playable demo of GORE can be downloaded from www.dreamcatchergames.com/gore.
In GORE’s revolutionary gameplay world, players will need more than a quick trigger-finger to demolish their opponents. The game’s 8 to 10 unique player classes allow each player to choose the character with the right weapons, strengths, and abilities for them. Most of GORE’s frighteningly lethal weapons have secondary-fire modes, a feature that gives players over 30 ways to demolish their opponents. But that’s just the beginning. Almost anything you see in GORE can be destroyed: weapons, health and stamina packs, ammo boxes, gas tanks and more. Don’t want a wounded enemy to get a health pack? Shoot it right before he touches it, and watch the pack explode with lethal force. Four game modes (Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, and Tactical warfare) make GORE challenging for any level of player.
“With an offline single-player ladder system and robust online multiplayer play, GORE brings a whole different gameplay experience to the 3D shooter arena,” said Richard Wah Kan, CEO of DreamCatcher Interactive. “DreamCatcher is excited to be working with such a talented group of game developers and to be adding GORE to DreamCatcher’s solid 2002 product lineup.”
“Gore is our first project, and we were very careful about choosing our publishing partner,” said Joel Huenink, President of 4D Rulers. “When DreamCatcher approached 4D Rulers, we knew that we had found the perfect fit.”
GORE’s story is set in a very dark future. The year is 2085, and chaos has become a way of life. Major cities are falling into ruin due to low fuel and no power, street gangs have grown into predatory terror groups that control the streets. Governments the world over are in trouble. They need a new breed of soldier to establish order—fighters able to handle situations of extreme danger and violence. Enter the “advanced combat training emulator,” a virtual reality training device that weeds out the mentally weak, and makes the best soldiers to be even better. Dubbed the "Meat Machine" by the men and women who use it, this simulator is GORE. Players “plug in” as futuristic Marines to familiarize themselves with their weapons, and train against potential enemies. For the soldiers of 2085, GORE is as real as it gets.
In GORE, players can virtually combat deadly AI opponents on their own PC, or jump online for the ultimate challenge—live human foes. Stamina (players ability to move and breathe) is an important part of gameplay. Moving and jumping uses stamina, as does carrying heavy weapons. Freshly respawned characters have full stamina and can use it to attack slower players, giving them better odds than in most games. This means players have to be conscious of their strength and use it wisely. Additionally, GORE has a unique armor system, whereby the game tracks each character’s armor rating in great detail. To take down a fully-armored enemy, players will need to focus their fire on a specific armored area, then put a killing blow into the exposed soft-spot.
GORE will be released in the Spring of 2002. (Spotted on Blue's)

Kellogs and Infogrames Teaming Up....

EuroGamer is reporting that Kellogs and Infogrames are teaming up. Here's the scoop (hehehehe):"Kellogg’s cereal boxes will soon feature demo versions of PC CD-Rom games from Infogrames’ catalogue of releases. The cross-promotion will cover 13 European territories including France and the UK, and has been “tailored specifically to each country, whilst remaining broadly pan-European,” a company spokesperson told us.
Each country will get between three and six CD-Rom demos, with games such as Heart of Darkness, Action Man Destruction X, Asterix Mega Madness, SPY Fox and Speed Dog & Wolf proving that this promotion is mostly for the kiddies’ benefit. That said, we were a bit surprised to see Alone in the Dark and Desperados amongst their number. Perhaps those will ship with Muesli and bran flakes…
Amongst the cereals are popular brands like Frosties, Coco Pops, Rice Krispies and more. Kellogg’s aim to make the CD-Rom very visible on the front of the box, so that consumers can “easily collect all six games.”
“This unique cross promotion is demonstrating without doubt that video games are now a mass market entertainment in their own right and perfectly suits Infogrames’ vision and strategy,” commented Infogrames’ Catherine Simon / V.P. Licensing Out Europe."

Call Sign: Charlie Interview....

HomeLan has posted a Call Sign: Charlie interview where they talk with Tomas Roller of Outsider Development, the Slovak Republic-based developer currently at work on this upcoming tactical first-person shooter set in the Vietnam War. Here's a snip:HomeLAN - How did you come up with the idea for Call Sign: Charlie?
Tomas Roller - At the time we started to work on the game engine (it was a 2D RTS at that time), we weren’t decided about setting of the game and its name. After long discussions we agreed on Vietnam War period and kept on working. Luckily, we awoke that there’s no future for another Command & Conquer clone and the game was completely re-worked, game principles changed and engine re-programmed. One of the most important changes we have made was also the decision to approach the theme more sensitively. This philosophy is applied even in the name of our game. Instead of choosing aggressive and cheap name like Ho Chi Minh’s Menace or Vietcong Killer we decided for arcane and ambiguous Call Sign: Charlie where Charlie may stand as a code letter for the soldier squad but also for the enemy (U.S. soldiers used to call Vietcong Charlie).

3DAction Planet has posted a first look today at the eagerly awaited Unreal Tournament 2. Here's a snip:"...Currently being developed by the veterans at Digital Extremes, whose resume includes achievements ranging from Unreal to Adventure Pinball: Forgotten Island, this long-awaited second part will be published by Infogrames sometime during the third quarter of this year. Like its illustrious predecessor, UT 2 will be a multi-player blastfest that will also give you the option to mix it up against a host of fiendishly clever bots. Up to 32 players will be able to humble each other online, and you can expect the usual game modes such as Deathmatch and Capture the Flag as well as Domination 2, Survivor and the intriguing Bombing Run.
Is there a storyline? Well, it’s still the Future, where the favorite sport of the masses is watching wild-eyed jokers like you waste each other on TV in bouts of arena combat for fame and fortune. You’ll be fighting against such plug-uglies as Automatons, Aliens, aptly named Juggernauts, and Nightmare foes – 26 enemy types in all, many available only after you’ve “unlocked” them through progressive victories."

Cnet news has posted up a good article about why people aren't upgrading to Win XP Here’s a snip:The problem, discovered last Thursday, was created when engineers attempted to update software on a server, she said, adding that it is expected to be corrected before Tuesday.
Read the rest here.
The spokeswoman said she could not confirm the number of people affected by the problem, but said about 8 million people download Windows XP software updates each week.
The news does not bode well for Windows XP users who are at risk from two serious security holes announced by the Redmond, Wash.-based company last month.
The vulnerabilities could leave computers open to malicious hackers and at risk of being temporarily shut down from a denial-of-service attack or used in such an attack on other computers.

CVG has posted up a short preview of No One Lives Forever 2, Monolith's first-person shooter sequel, along with three new screenshots from the game. Here's a snip:Once again you take on the role of the curvy Cate Archer, fighting the evil organisation HARM and averting the end of the world. The latest high-end LithTech engine, going by the name of Jupiter, will guarantee a stunning visual experience, but it's in the gameplay and AI that we're expecting the most significant improvements. Rather than the ultra-linear move 'n' shoot experience of the original, NOLF 2 (or The Operative 2: No One Lives Forever as it's apparently to be known) includes a much greater emphasis on stealth. Avoiding enemies will be an integral part of the game, and to aid you in that task Monolith is introducing the ability to lean around corners and disappear into hiding places.
