Voodoo Extreme has posted an interview with Sr. Producer Vic DeLeon, about the Digitalo's upcoming FPS Devastation. Here's a snip:VE3D: 2003 will be a year packed with FPS releases. How will Devastation stand out from the crowd in regards to the gameplay?
VD: It seems like every year is packed with FPS releases these days, doesn’t it? As much as you don’t want to, you can’t help but think of the other games that will be out when yours is. Devastation is going to be a high-action FPS with a high level of interactivity, an engrossing storyline set to a cyberpunk theme, feature the ability to command intelligent NPC teammates, use real-world modeled weapons and introduce a brand new style of Multiplayer game called Territories. I don’t know of any other games coming out that will offer ALL that.
And to top it off, I think Devastation will stand apart because of its visual style and theme. The dirty, gritty, post-apocalyptic urban warfare feel is unique and exciting.

Here's the scoop: Everyone on the Battlefield team at DICE and EA has been working late nights on another surprise for the community. We’d like to take this time to announce the Battlefield 1942 1.3 patch – it’s coming soon, maybe even sooner than you think! Look for more details about the patch soon, for now here’s a sneak peek:
Implemented TK solution: On the server-side you can implement various TK-solutions such as a Spawn Delay penalty (puts them into spawn limbo) or the simple Kick/Ban. On the client-side you'll be able to Forgive or Punish TK depending on how the server is set up.
Client performance optimization
Map-loading optimized
Improved interface for in-game voting
In addition, the 1.3 patch will allow Road to Rome users to play on original BF1942 servers. You will still need to own RtR in order to play on the new maps included in the expansion pack.
As always, stay tuned to the official site for patch information and other updates.
All right soldiers, this concludes your briefing for this week. Now get out there and onto the battlefields on the double!

Road to Rome Expansion Pack's GONE GOLD ....

[Frag-girlie] @ 4:50 PM MST Wednesday, January 22, 2003 [Comment on news]
The Road to Rome expansion pack for Battlefield 1942 is now complete and will be available in North America during the first week in February. Here's the press release: EA is pleased to announce that the Battlefield 1942: The Road to Rome expansion pack has GONE GOLD and will begin to ship on Tuesday, February 4 in North America. The multi-player focused expansion pack will give players more of what they have grown accustomed to with the original Battlefield 1942, including more maps, more vehicles, and more fighting forces.
The Road to Rome will focus exclusively on the key, yet largely underpublicized Italian and Sicilian campaigns of WWII. Players can choose to fight on six new maps including Operation Husky (Sicily), Operation Baytown and the battles for Anzio, Salerno, Santo Croce and Monte Cassino. Each map comes with highly detailed environments such as Italian houses, Mediterranean trees and even the ruined Monte Cassino Monastery.
Controllable vehicles are the heart of the Battlefield 1942 experience and The Road to Rome will feature eight new vehicles in addition to the more than 30 in the original title. These include the German BF-110 and British Mosquito twin-engined fighter-bombers. Also debuting are Italian and new British and German tanks and anti-tank guns. The original Battlefield 1942 PC game will be required to play The Road to Rome.
Battlefield 1942: The Road to Rome is being developed by Digital Illusions of Sweden and published by Electronic Arts under the EA Games brand.

Hitman 2: Silent Assassin Review....

[Frag-girlie] @ 4:41 PM MST Wednesday, January 22, 2003 [Comment on news]
Invisible Dream has posted a review of IO Interactive's third person action game, Hitman 2: Silent Assassin. Here's a nibblet:"... You may even go into a mission with every intention of being a silent assassin, but as soon as you get detected -- And you will -- It's far too tempting to simply blast everyone to smithereens and Rambo your way through the objectives. By the time you've played the game at length, the notion of truly stealthing your way through to the end of a given mission is perceived as more of a novelty than a legitimate mode of progress, given the amount of firepower and hit-taking abilities Agent 47 has available to him.
Why go through hell trying to make sure the guards never notice you, when you could simply whip out an automatic weapon and mow them all down? Most gamers won't be studious enough to discipline themselves into playing it the hard way just so they can live up to the game's theme. Most gamers will mostly be interested in completing goals and finishing missions any way they can. The amount of detail and opportunities the game gives you to stealth your way through a given mission are truly remarkable, but most of it I never experienced because it was far too easy to blast everything in sight."

Worthplaying has posted a Q&A where they chat with People Can Fly's game designer and co-owner, Adrian Chmielarz, about the forthcoming FPS, Painkiller. Here's a snip:4. Can you give us some info on your graphics engine? What’s so special about it, where you looking for anything specific that other engines do not offer? Such as?
I’d say what I am most impressed with in the graphics department is the overall quality. Of course we do move around insane amount of polygons, but at the same time everything – models, textures, lighting - is just so good that I can honestly say Painkiller is going to have some of the most impressive graphics we’ve ever seen in PC world.
I could throw a lot of nice buzzwords at you (pixel shaders, volumetric lights, etc. – you name it, we have it), but we never forget we’re trying to make a great game, not a great tech demo. Of course the idea is to match the technology and the gameplay, and this is exactly what we focus on.
Battlefield 1942: The Road To Rome Preview ....
Posted by
[luckee] @ 10:44 AM MST Monday, January 20, 2003 [Comment on news]
Homelan has posted up a good preview of the expansion the Road to Rome. Here’s a snip: World War II continues to be a busy time period for game developers to milk for virtually any game genre and yet even with this sea of WWII titles, Battlefield: 1942 was something special. The multiplayer oriented first person shooter from developer Digital Illusions and publisher Electronic Arts got lots of pre-release hype in 2002 and it came through with that promise when it was released last fall. The game's support for up to 64 players gave the virtual soldiers access to vast battlegrounds in Europe, North Africa and in the Pacific with a boatload of weapons, gun emplacements and vehicles to use. Battlefield: 1942 became a best seller, won a bunch of gaming critics awards and thousands of players are playing the game online as we write this.
Both DICE and EA must have known that the game would be a huge hit because an expansion pack to Battlefield: 1942 was already in development before the game was released. Now that expansion, The Road to Rome, is nearly completion and HomeLAN got a chance to check out a near-final version of the game sent by ER to check out the product for ourselves.
The expansion pack uses the one major theater of war in WWII that wasn't touched on in the original game: the invasion of Italy and Sicily. The Road to Rome doesn't stray from its parent's gameplay formula of controlling and holding points on the map (If it aint broke..well, you can say the rest) but simply offers more of what Battlefield: 1942 did so well; new maps, new vehicles, new weapons and two new armies (the Allied French and the Axis Italians). My only regret in the expansion's new content is that The Road to Rome's settings don't allow for much naval combat (which may be why DICE and EA released a new official Pacific Theater map for free over the Internet last month that was heavy naval combat).
The expansion adds its new content directly into the original game so when you fire that game up for the first time following the installation you will see the six new maps clearly labeled in the game's menu interface. The expansion also installs a new 1.25 patch for the full game which presumably will be released separately as with the original, all six maps are based loosely on real battles that occurred in World War II. My two favorite maps in The Road to Rome are Operation Husky where you can parachute into the battle on the British side as your try to invade Sicily and take it from the Italian army. This map is the closest to an Omaha Beach scenario in the expansion and also features the only really large naval unit in the product (an Allied ship that provides cover for the British troops storming the beach)
However, my favorite map to play by far is the Battle for Monte Cassino, where the French army has to take a Benedictine monastery from a very well entrenched German force. Not only do the Allies have to start at the bottom of a hill and move up to take over each control point until they finally get to the monastery, the map itself is set at night with only a little bit of moonlight. It not only gives the map itself a look that's unlike other map in the expansion, but it also means that while the Allies are working themselves up that hill to the monastery you could up right up to an enemy tank and not notice it until its almost on top of you.

Conflict: Desert Storm Review....

[Frag-girlie] @ 12:04 PM MST Thursday, January 16, 2003 [Comment on news]
Ownt.com has posted a review of Conflict: Desert Storm. Here's a bit on the interface:"The interface is a little clumsy at first. If you are expecting any type of advanced interface as far as switching as weapons or switching characters, be prepared that the interface will take a while to get used to, and the more you get used to it, the more you will wonder why certain aspects of the interface are the way they are. For instance, if you are getting shot and you need to either switch weapons or use a medkit, you can't just push a single button and be done with it, you will have to open a rolling inventory system where you will have to roll past all of your inventory until you find the object you are looking for.
Some people could look at this feature and say that it adds to the realistic feel of the game, since when in a real firefight, you wouldn't be able to whip out a medkit and help yourself. I tend to look at it as a flaw in the interface system. Once you play a few missions of the game and get the hang of the interface though, it will become second nature and you will be able to select items quickly, but not as quickly as if it was done with binding to single keys and sub menus.

Another Road to Rome Preview ....

[luckee] @ 1:55 PM MST Wednesday, January 15, 2003 [Comment on news]
PC.IGN.Com has posted up a good review of Battlefield 1942 expansion Road To Rome. Here’s a snip Battlefield 1942 has managed to grind productivity to a halt on several occasions here at work. Late nights and weekends bring gunfire, explosions and screams of pain to the IGN offices. More than a few editors have stayed after hours for that one last game that will give the fix they need. But that fix is never enough. There have been frequent sightings of Ivan and Cory asleep at their desks, drool slowly seeping into the cracks between keys, with a mouse in one hand and Japanese cries of control points being lost washing over their snoring bodies. Just last night, even though the usual soothing call of his bed was pulling him to sleep, Dan found himself sitting down in front of the computer for a quick game. Of course that quick game lasted four hours and meant sleep at three in the morning. Well that and the speed, can't forget about the speed.
With this in mind, we're sure you can understand the excitement that we felt when we heard we would get the chance to take a trip down to Electronic Arts in Redwood City, CA and look at the first expansion pack for Battlefield 1942 entitled The Road to Rome. The siren song of DICE's superlative shooter brought five of us (Steve, Dan, Ivan, Tal, and Cory) down for some significant hours of hands-on play. From the moment we wandered into the EA offices and heard that lovely Battlefield tune, it was on. The blood started pumping and we were ready to start shooting some fools.
Considering we're normally teaching other players the meaning of pain, it was more than a little shocking to come up against the group of testers that had basically been playing the game non-stop for days and days. They were good. Some of them were sickeningly good, especially since they knew the maps and we didn't. But when the shooting started, it didn't matter that by the end of the day only one of us had managed to crack the top three slot. Thanks Dan! You're the greatest! (Please note that Ivan only played three of the maps on a feeble computer and Cory spent the day filming.)
Road to Rome covers one of the more overlooked campaigns in popular media. Italy was a big turning point in the war, removing one of the Axis points and clearing the path for a southern advance into Germany. The six new maps cover some of the major points of this campaign and offer some awesome gaming opportunities. Each of the maps has definitely been shown the same amount of care that draped onto the first set.
Two new sides are also entering the fray. The French and Italians make their first appearance with new skins, weapons, vehicles, and voices. Of course, we managed to play as both of these sides to get a solid feel and the main differences lay in the Italian assault and French medic weapons, which you can read about in the sections below.
You can read the rest here.

HomeLan has posted a Vietcong Q&A in which Pterodon's Jarek Kolar chats about the upcoming Vietnam War themed FPS. Here's a taste:HomeLAN - What other gameplay elements in Vietcong do you consider to be important?
Jarek Kolar - We were extremely careful to make the weapons look as realistic as possible allowing players to experience, what it actually feels like to hold and fire a weapon. We also took into consideration the recoil, accuracy, and authenticity for each weapon.
We have put a lot of focus on the level of detail put into the environment. We were fortunate enough to spend many weeks in Vietnam, traveling through various areas where the war took place. The trip gave us the chance to photograph and film landscapes, flora, fauna, architecture and means of transportation. All of this helped us to create realistic jungle environments.

Computer and Video Games has posted a brief preview of Novalogic's forthcoming Delta Force: Black Hawk Down, based on play with a four level single player build. Here's a nibblet:"...And we must say we haven't been disappointed. The four levels in the new beta code were clearly chosen to show off the diversity of action Novalogic has crammed into the game this time round, and they do so with considerable aplomb. Rather than splitting different types of action up into different levels, each mission is a carefully scripted blend of styles, broken up into several short, pacey, objective-led bursts. It's a strictly linear approach and at times completely on-rails, but it does make for an exciting pseudo squad-based romp."

We made a trip up to EA's offices to get in some quality playtime with the expansion, and from the looks of things, Battlefield fans (like us) are in for a lot more online fun."
GeForce4 Ti 4200 Shootout ....

There’s a good GeForce4 Ti 4200 Shootout over at hexus.net.com I own two of these cards and must say they are worth every bit of $170-$200. Here’s a snip: NVIDIA's potent GeForce4 Ti series currently occupy the positions in this most important pricing sector. The original Ti 4200, the baby of the Ti clan, was the last to be released. Priced comfortably lower than its Ti 4400 and Ti 4600 counterparts, cards based on this chipset often overclocked to the default levels of the aforementioned cards. So, in effect, a Ti 4200 was the card to choose if you wanted the greatest bang from your buck.
With the recent introduction and acceptance of the 8x AGP standard, offering a theoretical 2GB/s+ interface between card and motherboard, and the now widespread availability of motherboard sporting this new speed, NVIDIA wisely decided to 'update' its range of cards.
We have a number of Ti 4200s in for a comparative review today. What's evident is that all of the Ti 4200s boasting the newer, faster 8x AGP standard, ship with 128MB of on-board memory. Further, to distinguish themselves from pre-8x cards with 128MB RAM, these cards have seen a bump in memory speed. We'll see just how each manufacturer approaches this most lucrative GPU, what they bundle with their efforts, how they attempt to outdo each other, and see just how far we can push them. All this on 2 leading platforms. Hang on for the benchmark ride.

GameSpot has posted a preview of DICE's online multiplayer fps expansion pack, Battlefield 1942: Road. Here's more:A total of nine vehicles are introduced in The Road to Rome. There are four new armored vehicles, and we're happy to point out that all the new vehicles with top guns protect the gunner. This design addresses the common complaint that the machine gunners on the Battlefield 1942 tanks are too exposed and simply make for easy kills. The Axis side has two new tanks. There's the German Sturmgeschutz, a medium-armor tankbuster that carries a big main gun with a limited turret that can't turn much beyond center and also has an enclosed machine gun position. The Italian M11-39 tank is quick medium tank with an enclosed top machine gun.
Raven Shield Q&A....

[Frag-girlie] @ 3:39 PM MST Friday, January 10, 2003 [Comment on news]
InGaming has posted a Q&A with Chadi Lebbos, Éric Bégin and Mike McCoy of Ubi Soft where they discuss the highly anticipated tactical shooter, Raven Shield. Here's a snippet:InGaming : As demonstrated with the screenshots, Raven Shield will be visually appealing, due to time and effort being devoted to this aspect, and also due to the flexibility of the Unreal Warfare engine. But in order to be an immersive experience, the audio has to be on par with the visual effects. What measures have been taken in order to ensure the sound quality will be on par with the visual quality?
Ubi Developers : Well, for one thing, we brought to the team an excellent audio designer in Nicolas Duveau. He knows the ins and outs of our in house sound engine, which is called DARE (Digital Audio Rendering Engine). Integrating DARE in the Unreal engine gives us the best possible sound for this game. It brings many dynamic ambiences and sounds to bring that immersive experience along with a lot of subtleties for the player to discover.
Also, we have been working with a company called Danetracks for the sounds of the weapons. This company did similar sounds for The Matrix J Weapon sounds in that movie were amazing and we wanted that kind of quality for the game. Basically, all 57 weapons will have their real sounds, whether it is outdoors or indoors!

Action Trip has posted an interview with Alexey Leshev, the script writer of Kreed, of Russian development team Burut Software about their upcoming sci-fi shooter. Here's a snip:AT: Next year, Kreed will have to compete with games like Unreal 2 and many other FPS titles. Explain which gameplay elements will make Kreed unique?
AL: KREED successfully combines "hardcore" and "thought-out" gameplay. Player will not only have to face smart monsters, but are going to have to burn a brain cell can or two, in order to think of a way out. That's why the game has various puzzles and traps. The player will also be able to control a transporter and Combat Robot. For example, to get to the armored legionnaire fortress you will have to ram it with a transporter. And the combat robot will be used to fight another one in the giant arena.
Another aspect of the gameplay is the dynamic and deep esoteric- philosophical storyline that touches the eternal values. We immerse the player into the reality of a world that's set 800 years in the future.

[Frag-girlie] @ 11:05 AM MST Monday, January 6, 2003 [Comment on news]
HomeLan has posted a Q&A with Laurent Delayen, the Team leader at Kamehan Studios on popular UT mod and standalone product, Tactical Ops. Here's a snip:HomeLAN - Despite the release of Unreal Tournament 2003, the UT mod of Tactical Ops continues to be extremely popular with thousands of people playing every day. How do you feel about the mod's longetivty?
Laurent Delayen - I'm very happy about the latest version of Tactical Ops, we reached a nice gameplay balance and the game is very enjoyable. That's the most important, the game is fun to play. I think UT 2003 won't interfere much with Tactical Ops, as it's completely different game. Now when CS and TO like mods will appear in a few months, it'll be a different story. Tactical Ops uses the UT 1 technology, that was released in 1999, so it's naturally getting old. However CounterStrike is the best example showing that a top notch technology doesn't make a game, but gameplay does.

PunkBuster News was updated the other day with word regarding the new PB GUID Auth servers. Here's a quote from PB:"Using the new PB Guid Auth servers, PB Servers will now be able to determine valid GUIDs from hacked or faked GUIDs and will be able to remove players who are not using a valid GUID/cdkey from games on PB Servers. We also will soon be implementing our new policy of globally banning GUIDs that are associated with PB Violations that involve known PB Hacks. Some cheats/hacks interfere with PB's ability to detect hacks/cheats, to take screenshots, to report cvar values, etc. Using such a hack is in direct violation of our End User License Agreement and terminates the license to use PunkBuster software. Starting today, any punks caught by PunkBuster using such a hack will be subject to global banning from all PB Servers without recourse."

UNREAL II PREVIEW....

[luckee] @ 8:53 AM MST Thursday, January 2, 2003 [Comment on news]
There's a good preview of Ureal II the awakening over at Computer Video Games.com Here?s a snip: "We've improved it in several ways. Obviously the storyline, and in the variety of the missions. You defend areas against assault, you escort VIPs and so on. And graphically it's superb." But doesn't he think the FPS needs to move on from the 'go down a corridor, press a button, kill everything' mindset?
"That's kind of the core of these games and they're all going to have that. But we have a conversation tree, other people have vehicles in there, we have more advanced physics... Things are going to come from more engaging stories, that's what brings things to life. And Legend knows about stories. We made text adventures back in the day. I find it interesting that Half-Life was bringing just a touch of what was in an adventure game into first-person shooters, and I was like: 'Yes, of course that's the way things should go!' The puzzles in Unreal II aren't confounding, you'll never get stuck, but you'll be doing cool things and feeling like you're always making progress. And with your crew you're always getting new information. Whenever we feel the player is in trouble, there's Aida to help you out."
That reminds me: I should return to the fray. There's still so much to see, so much to do. And I can't wait to start playing again.
You can read the rest here.
