Postal 2 Q&A....
Posted by [Frag-girlie] @ 11:22 AM MST Tuesday, November 26, 2002 [Comment on news]

Action Vault has posted a Postal 2 Q&A, where they chat with Running With Scissors' Geoff Neale and Josh Leichliter about the artwork for their upcoming Unreal engine powered first person shooter. Here's a snippet:

Action Vault: With respect to the character design, texture and animation aspects of Postal 2 what are your primary goals, and how do you feel they differ from those for a typical action game? Why have you chosen to include these differences, and how much complication and/or work do they add?

Josh: Gamers will be very impressed with the look of the Postal 2 I think. It's got some excellent level design and many of the character/enviroment textures are photo referenced, giving Paradise and its bizarre denizens a very realistic look. Postal 2 will sport a very broad range of characters to interact with, blow up and piss on as you see fit. The character AI is very intelligent, the animations are fluid and realistic, and the textures are photographic. You tend to forget it's just a game.

Working from photos can be challenging, despite what one may think. We have a texture archive of literally thousands of raw photos taken at every time of day in every conceivable lighting condition. Its my job to make sure the textures are creative, consistent, and as efficient as the situation permits.

Gamer's Hell has posted a Medal Of Honor: Allied Assault Spearhead review. Here's a snip:

"Just like its big brother, Spearhead has an incredible soundset. Serving up one of the most immersive environments I've played, the sounds have a realistic and very characteristic weight to them. Very well done. Voiceovers are clear, and obviously done by professionals. Probably my only issue with the sound is between levels. We are treated to Sgt Barnes reading from a journal about his thoughts on war. These can be tedious and overly dramatic. I started skipping them after a while."

Sniper: Path of Vengeance Review....
Posted by [Frag-girlie] @ 10:33 AM MST Sunday, November 24, 2002 [Comment on news]

Recently we had a guest writer come and give us some help on a few games that were needing reviews. General_Ded has served up for us a review of Xicat Interactive's recently released fps, Sniper: Path of Vengeance. To go along with his review, I have included 10 exclusive screenshots that Xicat hooked me up with. Here's a snip:

"...While the visuals are ok in this game the sounds are wonderful. The musical score is emotion provoking! Many times I realized I was tensing up while rounding a corner in the game. I sat up and had to clear my head and free my mouse from the death grip I had on it. The weapon sounds and the other ambient sounds are very good also. One note…This game has adult language. Make sure the volume is down if you play at work or in the home where others are around! Some dialogue will definitely catch others’ attention! Overall, the sounds contributes to an audio experience that really makes for an exciting time.

Thanks again General_Ded! :)

Sexy Video Shows Off GeForceFX Power....
Posted by [Frag-girlie] @ 9:55 AM MST Sunday, November 24, 2002 [Comment on news]

Sexy Video Shows Off GeForceFX Power is the name of a post on ExtremeTech.

Although not as obviously pornographic as BMX XXX, nVidia's rendering of a scantily clad pixie left little to the imagination. Filmy, almost sheer leaves cover the wood sprite's private parts -- and seem to be added as an afterthought. The rendering, created by one of the Final Fantasy designers, is both beautiful and slightly unsettling.

According to an nVidia representative, a version of this demo does exist with the leaves removed. "We're bringing porno to graphics", chortled the exec, who wished to remain nameless.

HomeLAN has posted an interview with Tommy Tallarico of Mystical Stone Entertainment, LLC, one of the organizers behind the upcoming video game music concert to be held next May at the Hollywood Bowl. Here is a snip:

HomeLAN - What other things are in the planning stages for the concert?

Tommy Tallarico - There are so many great tie-ins to an event like this that its taking a lot of time to figure out which ones to focus on the most. One of the things we intend on doing is having a 100 or so playable kiosks for the event attendees. Because it will be held on the last day of E3 all of the industries best games will be showcased right down the street at the LA Convention Center. Why not have the general public be able to play all of the latest and greatest stuff!! Because E3 is not open to the public this would be a great opportunity for the fans to come out and enjoy the best upcoming titles 6 months before they come out! We want this to be a video games festival! Not just a concert that you sit in your seat for about 2 hours and watch. We would like this to become the video game Woodstock for the 21st century.

No One Lives Forever 2: A Spy in H.A.R.M.'s Way Review....

GameFeeder.net has posted a review of Monolith's No One Lives Forever 2: A Spy in H.A.R.M.'s Way. Here's a bit:

"The game’s engine has some interesting characteristics which make it quite adventure oriented rather than just a plain shooter. One interesting element is the ability to 'power up' your vital skills like accuracy, vitality, sneaking, hiding, searching and lock picking. As you gain intelligence points through picking up vital objects and training manuals you can use the points to update your skills. It's good to be able to actually see the improvements gained though assigning your points to various skills. For example picking locks and searching bodies for ammo and health becomes quicker as you upgrade these skills."

Ghost Recon: Island Thunder Review ....
Posted by [Frag-girlie] @ 9:35 AM MST Sunday, November 24, 2002 [Comment on news]

Ownt has posed a review of Ghost Recon: Island Thunder. Here's a nibblet:

"The AI of the computer controlled players was a little less than I thought it should have been. With so many other features in the game that seem to be all for realism, I was a little surprised to see that the AI didn't seem as realistic as the game. The rest of the game is very realistic and I had high hopes for the AI in the game. I didn't like the fact

that I had to keep bossing my team around for them to complete the mission. It would have been nice to have a predesigned plan where I could just specify that I want them to follow "Plan Alpha" or "Plan Beta". Some of the positions that the "bots" positioned themselves in didn't seem to be the best place possible. After the "bots" reach the nav point that you have specified, they don't seem to have very much intelligence when it comes to facing the best way for what their position is in the map and where enemies still are.
One of the items in the game that made me a little angry is to see a game like Ghost Recon/Island Thunder still not incorporate enemies that have ears. Developers still haven't learned that some players want their enemies to hear gunshots and to see if their terrorist buddies have fallen to the ground. Instead they continue to patrol their section of the map and not wander very far off their designed course."

Kreed Q&A....
Posted by [Frag-girlie] @ 9:32 AM MST Sunday, November 24, 2002 [Comment on news]

Computer and Video Games has conducted a Q&A with Burut Scriptwriter Aleksey "GinunGagap" Leshev, where they talk about his company's forthcoming futuristic FPS, Kreed. Here's a snip:

CVG: We understand that you've got some pretty hardcore plans for NPC AI in
Kreed. Could you tell us exactly what your aims are in this area?

Leshev: The main peculiarities of Kreed's AI is live, natural enemy behaviour and the orientation on thought-out team interaction, where the tactical analysis of the situation is important.

Thus, in team mode, single bots are controlled by the group commander. Tactics can rapidly change depending on the situation. Besides, the player can select group strategy. And the group will use it if it won't be inappropriate.

It should be also underlined that an array of factors influence the enemies attacks: landscape; his reserves; weapon type; your tactics and so on. AI takes it into account and uses it against you.

A lot of things will depend on the way you play. The enemy has "surprises" for every player. If you hide you will be outflanked and destroyed, not only by gunfire but by fragments of grenades. If you constantly attack, the enemy will defend or even retreat.

Another of Kreed's AI feature is the effective use of level interior. Bots use obstacles (tables, boxes, containers, barrels, columns, etc.) as temporary shelters. They can run from one obstacle to another to get closer to the enemy in combat.

Iron Storm Review....

Game Chronicles has posted a review of Iron Storm. Here's a snippet:

"There is a reasonably good story but it serves only to tie the various missions together. At no time do you ever get personally involved with the plot or even feel that Anderson is involved. The designers try to establish a relationship with our hero and Cecile, the girl who gives him orders over the radio, but even this part of the story falls short. In the end you are left with a series of missions that require you only to kill or be kills, and admittedly, that is enough."

Gamers Pulse has posted a review of Red Storm's most recently released expansion pack for Ghost Recon, Island Thunder. Here's a snip:

"The one thing I like about this expansion pack is that it is simply not a map pack. Red Storm went out of their way to improve an already well-received game and build on that success. This kind of tweaking gives the gamer faith that the developer is not deserting him once a game ships. Kudos to Red Storm for this continued level of support."

ZenGamer has posted a review of 4X Studio's alternate history shooter, Iron Storm. Here's a snip from the conclusion:

"I have to say that Iron Storm left me with mixed feelings. I enjoyed the game for what it was, rather like a pulp novel you pick up at the used book store: It's fun to read, but once you are done it will most likely sit on the shelf collecting dust. So, if you are looking to pick up another clone FPS with a unique - if poorly written - story concept, then Iron Storm is for you. You will indeed be treated to a taste of what life in a world of perpetual war would be like, but just be prepared for the bugs, the invulnerable bad guys, the frustrating tromps through maps that are flat and bland, and the moodless and repetitive battles."

Linux MOH:AA Admin Tool ....
Posted by [Frag-girlie] @ 10:37 AM MST Tuesday, November 19, 2002 [Comment on news]

The Linux MOH:AA Admin Tool is now available. Here's a summary of what the tool is all about:

The tool takes a different approach to server administration because it doesn't use RCON. Instead, the software opens a direct link to the game server and communicates directly through the console interface, allowing for a greater level of control. Because of this interface method, it is capable of responding to events as they happen rather than having to rely on polling the server at regular intervals. Its robust TK handling features make full use of this by processing and tracking each player death as it occurs. Unfortunately, current limitations of the game server engine event logging have restricted TK handling to TDM games, but the upcoming release of the Linux version of the expansion pack should allow support for other game types as well.
You can grab the file at Clan Shortfuse and FilePlanet. (Spotted on 3DAction Planet)

Mafia: City of Lost Heaven Review....
Posted by [Frag-girlie] @ 9:47 AM MST Monday, November 18, 2002 [Comment on news]

ASE Labs has posted a review of Mafia: City of Lost Heaven. Here's a taste:

"I'm gonna start this off with a big WOW. The detail in this game is absolutely amazing. The game's maker Illusion Softworks really went all out on this. The faces in this game are so detailed, and along with that comes excellent facial expressions and lip synch with the voice-overs. The character's eyes can follow movement and blink and their body movements are very smooth for the most part thanks to the motion capture technology the developers used. Another area where the graphics stand out are on the cars. It would be expected that the graphics on the cars be very good considering you spend the majority of your time driving from mission to mission in the many different cars. The 1930's cars used in this game are all different in some aspect, which adds to the realism factor alot more. From the leather interior of the cars to the exterior finish the car's appearances really stand out. The only aspect of graphics that didn't seem that great were some of the characters clothes had textures that seemed like they were blurry or pixelated but this is easily overlooked when looking at all the other graphics in the game. The environment has on-par graphics with other games but nothing that really struck me as amazing. The whole game environment is in the city with the exception of the outskirts of town which has a more country feeling to it. Luckily all of the buildings in the city appear differently so you don't have to look at the same 3 or 4 buildings cloned throughout town."

Hitman 2: Silent Assassin Review ....
Posted by [Frag-girlie] @ 9:44 AM MST Monday, November 18, 2002 [Comment on news]

Game Rampage has posted a Hitman 2: Silent Assassin Review. Here's a nibblet:

"The effects are very cool, with blood hitting the walls in the directions of the shots fired, bullet holes, smashed items that you break, weapons and nifty explosions are all represented well. The graphical quality of the game is only hindered by sometimes annoying camera work, but it was never so bothersome that I didn't adapt quickly. The models all use the new gaming trend of the rag doll effect when they are hit, meaning that they contort and fly backwards in sometimes funny manners. Also, if you drop a weapon say on a roof, the physics engine will see to it the weapon clatters to the ground, and then slides off a steep incline, of course blowing your cover if you are not careful. The game ran rather well, and of course all the details can be adjusted to fit your PC, from view distance, blood and gore levels, right down to shadows and weather effects."

Spearhead Review....
Posted by [Frag-girlie] @ 9:41 AM MST Monday, November 18, 2002 [Comment on news]

GameSpy has posted a review of EA LA's WWII themed FPS expansion pack, Spearhead. Here's a snip:

"The first campaign returns to the invasion of Normandy on D-Day, but you're not storming Omaha Beach this time. Instead, as new hero Sgt. Jack Barnes, you parachute behind enemy lines, meet up with a squad of British soldiers, and travel across the countryside with the ultimate goal of destroying a bridge to cut off an Axis supply route. As in Allied Assault, new objectives are fed to you as you progress, with the secondary goal of keeping your captain alive at all times (the rest of your squad, alas, is destined to pass). The opening sequence is pretty wild, and things never get boring -- you start out one level in a boat, there's a sequence where a German officer attempts to escape on a motorcycle, and you'll often take control of automatic turrets and battle tanks before ultimately destroying the bridge."

PlanetSide Q&A....
Posted by [Frag-girlie] @ 10:28 AM MST Thursday, November 14, 2002 [Comment on news]

HomeLan has posted a PlanetSide Q&A where they chat with Joe Marullo, one of the artists with Sony Online. Here's a snip:

HomeLAN - Obviously creating artworking for a game like PlanetSide is much different than the normal first person shooter. What are some of the challenges you have having to deal with in your job?

Joe Marullo - You have to keep reminding yourself "massively multiplayer". You really have to keep a rein on things and remember that you're creating art for a game that will be played by thousands of players simultaneously. For that reason, you can't go nuts on polygons, effects, and texture usage because you're dealing with gameplay that has to stay fluid as player after player pours into the scene. At the same time, things are expected to look as good as possible and it's been quite challenging to achieve that balance.

Sometimes painful sacrifices have to be made. For instance, the team really wanted a flamethrower in the game. The fans really wanted a flamethrower in the game. I sat there and built that weapon with those folks in mind, and our particle effects artists managed to create some really great flame art for it.

Then you realize, "What if 50 plus players standing in close proximity to each other start using these flaming particle effects at the same time? Will the game roll over die before their video card starts blowing circuits right off its board?"

At that point you're only left with the option of toning down the effect to the point where it just doesn't look good anymore. And rather than go that route, we had to say 'farewell' to the flamethrower idea. It can be rough and disheartening attempting to do everything you want to do from an artistic standpoint while still keeping it playable for massive numbers of players. And while every now and then we have to dismiss a feature because of that, for the most part the team has really managed to do a great job at making things look fantastic while keeping in mind the challenges and balances a game like this faces.

Video Game News has posted a review of 4X Studio's fictional-historical shooter, Iron Storm. Here's a taste:

"...Still, because the game offers a challenge built on moving from point to point, and doesn't just send respawned monsters at you, there is a certain satisfaction in defeating the levels that were designed to stop you. For the most part it is technically sound. And the game's universe is unique, offering many video segments, and a different feel than most games have had."

NOLF2 Review....
Posted by [Frag-girlie] @ 10:12 AM MST Thursday, November 14, 2002 [Comment on news]

The Entertainment Depot has posted a review of Monolith's spy shooter sequel, NOLF2. Here's a nibblet:

"With No One Lives Forever 2, the core gameplay of the original is mostly intact, with a few significant improvements. Most noticeable is a new skill system that allows the player to customize the abilities of the lovable superspy. Accuracy, weapon damage, health, armor, stealth, and a few other things can all be improved by spending points earned by accomplishing objectives. This adds an interesting new layer to the game, as gung-ho action-oriented players such as myself can play through the game with guns blazing, and sneaky types can improve those skills and become masterful infiltrators. Most of the points earned for this purpose are gained through finding various intelligence pieces, such as memos, notes and folders. I liked this aspect as it gave a tangible reward for taking time to find them, unlike the previous title where they were nothing more than an amusing diversion from the rest of the game. Some may feel the constant searching of file cabinets and corpses to be a tedious affair, but it only bothered me on a few occasions when that's all the player could do at the time. This problem is also avoided by putting points into the Search skill, which dramatically cuts down on the required time."

Deadly Dozen: Pacific Theatre Review ....
Posted by [Frag-girlie] @ 10:09 AM MST Thursday, November 14, 2002 [Comment on news]

GameSpot has posted a review of nFusion's latest squad-based shooter, Deadly Dozen: Pacific Theatre. Here's a snip:

"...This is largely because Pacific Theater, even more so than the original Deadly Dozen, is a game about creeping around and killing enemies from a distance. Thankfully, the environments and enemy AI make this style of play extremely satisfying. Pacific Theater's jungle environments are its most impressive feature. The levels are enormous--most appear to encompass perhaps two or three square miles of terrain. The diversity, density, and constant swaying motion of trees and undergrowth create a jungle atmosphere that's entirely believable. The fog curtain that plagued Deadly Dozen has been pushed back a little, but it's still around. As in the original, you won't be getting any panoramic views of your surroundings. However, the haziness seems more appropriate in the thick tropical foliage of Pacific Theater than it did in the bright sunlight of Deadly Dozen's desert levels."

EBGames.com has posted details on an unannounced multiplayer add-on that's apparently in the works for Battlefield 1942 called "The Road to Rome". Here's a bit:

Though multiplayer experience will be the focus of The Road To Rome, there will be a mode of unique single player action. These levels feature improved artificial intelligence with no scripting, meaning players will get a completely different experience each time.
  • Six new maps from the Sicilian and Italian campaigns including Operation Husky (Sicily), and the battles for Anzio and Monte Cassino.

  • Eight new vehicles including the German BF-110 and British Mosquito fighter bombers.

  • Two new fighting forces including the French legionnaires and Italian forces.

  • Three new hand-held weapons including a rifle grenade launcher, the British Sten SMG and bayonets.

  • Proprietary Refractor 2 engine raises bar for graphics and 3D rendering.

  • Huge multiplayer component supporting up to 64 players that requires teamwork and cooperation from each member in order to achieve victory for the Axis or Allies.

  • Unique single player mode features no scripting, meaning the player gets different experience each time they play.

    MOHLAA Spearhead Demo Impressions....

EuroGamer has posted their first impressions of the recently released demo of the MOH:AA add-on pack, Spearhead. Here's a snippet:

"Of course we’ve all heard that the game boasts nine new single player missions and 12 new multiplayer maps, but sadly in bringing the game slightly more up to date, EA LA hasn’t found time to emulate Allied Assault developer 2015’s spectacular level design. After the dramatic freefall intro, the opening levels, comprised mainly of clearing out houses and sneaking across fields in the dead of a Normandy night, are rather dull by comparison, and although there are some nice scripted moments (a boat ride, a tank attack and more), these aren’t enough to lift the Normandy sections."

U.S. Special Forces: Team Factor Review....
Posted by [Frag-girlie] @ 12:30 PM MST Monday, November 11, 2002 [Comment on news]

PC Gameworld has posted a review of U.S. Special Forces: Team Factor. Here's a nibblet:

"From the very beginning, I was quite confused as to what was happening around me. My teammates didn’t speak or call out, they just went about their business as if they were the only soldier out there, which made it quite difficult for me to determine who was on my team and who was not. Many times I saw another bot in front of me who I thought was on my team, only to get shot down instantly.

This is how the entire game went for me. Admittedly, my skills in this genre aren’t the highest, so the inability to be immersed in the experience really hurt any enjoyment I could have had with this game."

GameSpy has posted a review of 4x Studios' alternate history shooter, Iron Storm. Here's a snip:

"Iron Storm pins you down with sniper fire early and often, forcing you through aggravating save-and-reload loops. It's one of Iron Storm's favorite tricks: put someone with preternatural aim in a distant window and challenge the player to get the drop on him. Working your way through city streets elicits a real sense of dread, not because this is how a real soldier would feel, but because you know you're going to have to reload the game as soon as some guy in a far-off window kills you before you even see him. You can turn on a bright red targeting reticule that moves over opponents, but the effect is like something out of a light-gun game … and it doesn't do you any good unless you're already looking at someone."

    Hitman 2 Review....

PixelRage has posted a review of Hitman 2. Here's a snip:

"Character animation is very credible. Unlike other games, where characters don't seem to connect with floor textures when moving around, Hitman 2 characters really walk. The enemies and various characters in the game, as well as the avatar, take full advantage from great death animations, heading towards sublime when it comes to popping a few buckshots in the nearest enemy. The dude that just ran out of luck is slammed to the wall and then slips slowly on the floor, leaving blood marks all over the place. Not quite UT2K3 style, but very very close. Obviously damage is calculated according to impact zones, a bullet to the back of the head resulting in another victim added to the already long list."

    New World Order....
Posted by [Frag-girlie] @ 9:39 AM MST Friday, November 8, 2002 [Comment on news]

Montreal, Quebec. - Strategy First announced yesterday that they have struck an exclusive co-publishing agreement for the North American market with Dutch publisher Project Three Interactive for the first person shooter game New World Order for the PC.

"We know that New World Order will amaze the gaming community with its realistic gameplay and we're sure it will do great things for both of our companies," says Steve Wall, V.P.of Acquisitions for Strategy First.

New World Order is a single- and multiplayer tactical team-based shooter developed in Sweden by Project Three's studio Termite Games. This title stands out in the crowded FPS genre because it is one of the first built on next generation technology and promises to take the first person shooter genre to the next level by combining uncanny graphic detail with adrenaline pumping action and fun. Realistic gameplay and unparalleled game physics are brought to life by the in-house developed DVA-engine from Termite Games. The game also introduces new features like per pixel damage detection, tons of real life weapons which are available by rank, and a weight system that influences the player's actions, thus adding even more realistic gameplay. The game will have 12 HUGE levels in both single- and multiplayer mode, all very different by design and lay-out, set out all over the globe.

"We are extremely pleased to have signed a deal for North America with a dedicated company like Strategy First. We think their background as a publisher makes them an excellent fit for this product, which really involves a lot of strategy and tactics by the player in order to become successful. We are looking forward to jointly turning New World Order into a real hit on the North American continent," says Robert Ercevic, CEO of Project Three Interactive.

    And the story goes...
The story sees the player as John Dobbs, a decorated Navy Seal but a rookie member of the Global Assault Team (GAT), a commando squad formed by the world's powers in answer to the rise of freelance terrorist factions better known as The Syndicate. The GAT has the mandate to operate on a global level, prevent terrorist actions and dispose of The Syndicate any way they see fit. As John Dobbs the player will go in alone to try and prevent terrorist actions in 12 fierce missions that challenge even experienced FPS players. In multiplayer mode, gamers can choose to play as either The Syndicate or the GAT on a LAN or via the Internet, with up to 64 players on a server. Players can choose to take each other on as two teams or operate as one team and play against computer generated opponents.

Look for New World Order to ship in Q1 2003 in North-America.

BeyondUnreal has posted part 1 of their UT2003 review. Here's a taste:

"...Enter Unreal Tournament 2003, one of the most highly anticpated titles in years. The release of the demo alone, created an internet traffic-jam for over 24 hours as people rushed to download it. There were media tours, interviews, press releases, videos, chat sessions and more. There were leaks of multiple builds, allowing thousands of less scrupulous players to sneak a peek at more-or-less the entire game.

Can any game live up to this level of hype and anticipation? We intend to answer that very question over the next three segments. BeyondUnreal takes an in depth look at each element of the game, dissects it, and gives you our point-of-view. In many cases we disagree about aspects of UT2003, as do many of you. Stick with us, enjoy the ride, and as always, add your comments along the way."

    Gamer's Depot has posted a review of Hitman 2. Here's a snip:

"Probably the most impressive thing Hitman 2 brings to the table however, is the ability to complete your missions in as many as 5 different ways. In all but a few occasions, you are able to do things any way you like, in example such as hiding outside the window and waiting for your target to be alone and unaware and sneaking in and strangling him silently, or busting through the door with a shotgun and making him and his bodyguards fly across the room with a loud bang, or you could opt to snipe him instead when he goes outside for some air. This adds hours of replay to the game and really enables the player to have his own personal styles and preferences."

    Kreed Q&A....
Posted by [Frag-girlie] @ 2:07 PM MST Saturday, November 2, 2002 [Comment on news]

ToTheGame has posted a Kreed Q&A where they chat with the Burut Creative Team. Here's a taste:

TTG: You have stated in earlier interview that each mission has alternative ways of being solved and that many tactical tasks have to be solved in order to overcome the game. Please give a few examples.

BT: We really tried to avoid boring “linearity” when creating our missions. Our team had a task to give the player as much freedom as possible, and not to limit his actions. Mostly, it was achieved by advanced tactical planning of the gaming zones, where we took into account all the details, starting from the quantity of technical containers throughout the level to the position and the extension of ventilator and transport shafts.

Quite often in KREED, we give direct hints on this or that alternative way. You can risk by attacking numerous enemies, or try to avoid dangerous moments, using some shaft, or a part of a sewer system filled with water.

Among the puzzles of KREED we have a lot of labyrinths, such as “labyrinth-town”, “labyrinth-puzzle”, and “invisible labyrinth”. For example, to get through the “labyrinth-puzzle”, you have to connect precisely its rotating segments that open one of three passes.

Various machinery and equipment helps the player to accomplish KREED’s missions effectively. I.e., laser cutter will aid Daniel to pass the room that is full of huge containers. However, he must not only destroy the obstacle, but also be careful with the laser and not to hit the reflecting surfaces to avoid the explosion.

Air streams generated by huge ventilators can deliver the player to different passes. But, first he will need to adjust their speeds (each vent has five speeds!). The reactor hall can also serve as a good example, where you will need to switch the flows of deadly energy from one reactor to the other.

    Mafia Review....
Posted by [Frag-girlie] @ 2:03 PM MST Saturday, November 2, 2002 [Comment on news]

The Entertainment Depot has posted a review of Illusion Softworks' action title, Mafia. Here's a bit to get you going:

"Thankfully, Mafia's gameplay is as solid and worthwhile as it gets. Although the game takes a few missions to really get going, the wait is well worth it, as it soon delves into a refreshing variety of mission types that offers enough change to keep things feeling new and exciting with every outing. Starting out as a lowly goon, running simple duties like carting the big boys from job to job, you gradually work your way up the ranks as you progressively take riskier and riskier duties that range from intimidation and assaults to protection and bootlegging, and even to bombing and murder. In fact, you'll find that there's a great deal to do within Mafia, as a good chunk of the game is presented as a series of days in the life of a mobster, which means that you'll often have to follow a set routine: i.e., get your orders from the Don, grab a car and a weapon, set out to whatever it is that needs doing, and then return to home base. This partial sense of freedom also extends to the missions themselves, which in a move reminiscent of Hitman often give you the choice of approaching a situation whichever way you prefer. For example, one mission puts you in charge of driving down to a hotel / brothel, killing its manager and one of the prostitutes, then bombing the place and escaping via the rooftops. If you're looking for a shootout, you can blow away the manager in the restaurant, leaving you to shoot your way through the rest of the hotel; however, you could also wait for the manager to leave the restaurant and go up to his office, lift the key from the front desk, and then follow him up to the top floor where you could kill him and his bodyguard with a minimum of fuss. Most missions offer you this type of choice (entering a building from the heavily guarded front door or the fire escape is another), and allow different types of players the freedom to explore their strengths."

Ghost Recon: Island Thunder Review ....

Game Chronicles has posted a review of Red Storm Entertainment's recently released expansion pack, Ghost Recon: Island Thunder. Here's a snippet from their intro:

"Despite the hype, I don’t know how much personal input Tom Clancy puts into the computer games which bear his name. I suspect it’s more than we’d give him credit for, because his games really do bear his mark. I’ve read a number of Clancy’s books and I can honestly say that he does for political and military thrillers what Stephen King has done for horror.
What makes Clancy’s books so popular is the fact that he can make the reader’s heart pound with the same fear his characters must be feeling as they race to save the world without getting themselves killed in the process. His games can do the same for any gamer willing to really immerse himself in the situation."

US Special Forces: Team Factor Review....

The Adrenaline Vault has posted a review of 7FX's tactical shooter, US Special Forces: Team Factor. Here's a taste:

"Unlike most multiplayer-based shooters, Team Factor's Simulation mode offers a skill system. This light role-playing component will gradually improve six different skills as frequently as you use them. These include: strength - a measure of the load your character can carry; stamina - how much you run; stealth - the amount of time you spend walking slowly; awareness - how long per round you stand still; marksmanship - gained for use of the iron sights; and breath control - you'll become a more natural breather by using Team Factor's breath control function as much as possible. The game's skill points system helps to define player identities and make each character feel more unique."

    Hitman 2 Review....

PC Arena has posted a review of IO Interactive's Hitman 2. Here's a nibblet:

"Most of what adds to the gameplay is the fact that the AI is actually fairly intelligent and do what you would expect them to do. They notice a man wearing a black suit walking in the snow with a sniper rifle in his hand but they don’t think anything of the passing guard. Being able to change clothing, speed, and what you carry just in case they search you all adds to the feeling of actually being a real professional. And just to take it a step further, the music by the Budapest Radio Symphony Orchestra and Choir which instils the feeling of importance in every shot you take. Moreover, there are little touches like seeing a little cloud of fog form as one of the sentries exhales in cold weather make this a very, very immersive title."
