Delta Force: Black Hawk Down Review....

Actiontrip.com has posted up a lack luster review of Black Hawk Down. In my opinion I think the game was prepared really well. Any hoo... Here’s a snip: The latest installment in the Delta Force series is in many ways different, and technically superior to its predecessors. For one, the game uses a brand-new 3D engine, which is a welcome relief, given the "quality" of the Land Warrior 3D code. The gameplay is now more fast-paced and action-oriented than ever; the goal of the designers was to get across that very same sense of urgency that we saw in the movie, so instead of opting for a more sim-like approach (something that Raven Shield does so well) they've decided to make a highly cinematic and extremely dynamic recreation of the Somali conflict.
Right off the bat, you'll be thrown in the thick of things. You fly in on a Blackhawk while manning a minigun, or ride in a hummer while operating a .50 caliber heavy machine gun. Civilians will be screaming left and right as they battle for food rations in front of supply trucks, and then, all of a sudden, the "skinnies" will start popping out of nowhere and launching RPG's or shooting from AK-47s. Once the area has been cleared with the heavy machine guns you'll be ordered to follow waypoints on foot, while securing perimeters and clearing out enemy shooters from the nearby buildings.
DFBHD is mission based. Missions vary from, as I said, rescue operations, to the very same tasks and locations we've had a chance to see in the movie. Unfortunately, the designers didn't give much (or any) attention to incorporating a cohesive story in the game, but the lack of any narrative or recognizable characters is somewhat cushioned by the highly cinematic feel to the preset scenarios, and the way that the designers have directed the events in the game - they move at high pace and they look quite spectacular. The gameplay itself is very simplistic as it all comes down to gunning down bad guys and following your mission waypoints. The same can be said about the arsenal and the gun properties, as well as the player movement. DFBHD feels more like an action shooter than a military sim. The guns certainly don't recoil properly, and the semi-automatic rifles are way too accurate, even when the player is running and shooting. Delta Force soldiers move too fast (it's as if they're not carrying a single piece of equipment on them), and the jumping is highly unrealistic in a sense that the soldiers have a freakishly high vertical leap, not to mention that the physics are somewhat screwed up, so it seems as though they're floating rather than jumping under full battle gear. This all goes in line with the specific design approach that the developers have taken however. DFBHD gameplay is flamboyant, but ultimately very shallow. Still, that's not to say that I consider this to be an entirely bad thing. The designers had a certain goal in mind when they started out the design process and they've stuck with it. I rather enjoyed the varied maps, as well as the prompt unfolding of events. Even though they're not particularly true to life, the weapons are very fun to use, and if we were to judge BHD by its gameplay mechanics and overall atmosphere, then, I'd say that the game turned out quite successful.
Finally, the multiplayer mode is very fun, and just as good as those in any of the previous Delta Force games. In fact, given the game's technical superiority over its predecessors, it's safe to say that the multiplayer is the best one in the series yet. DFBHD brings a unique mix of military combat and arcade shooter elements which will certainly appeal to many gamers. I for one enjoyed it more than the multiplayer action in Raven Shield. Think of it this way; it's the single-player game but with real, live, and very dangerous human opponents. It's how the game was meant to be played in the first place.

More Elite Force 2 Preview....

[luckee] @ 3:12 AM MST Thursday, March 27, 2003 [Comment on news]
pc.ign.com has posted up a good preview of Elite Force II Here’s a snip:It has been very important to Ritual to create a cohesive experience that delivers the constant action Elite Force II is all about through storytelling that's in keeping with the fiction. Even though everyone with eyes, ears, hands, or any combination of the above will tell you that Elite Force II is nothing like your average Star Trek episode (what with all the shooting and the killing), crafting an intricate plot played out in classic Trek fashion is of paramount importance to the team. But, no amount of story is going to save gameplay that's disjointed. Ritual knows this.
The boys and girls who created SiN are making every effort to keep the action incredibly fast, but to still immerse the player in an objective driven, refined, Trek storyline and universe overflowing with details and noticeable coolness that non-fans (heathens, blasphemers and pagans) might miss out on.
Analyzing a single mission will help you better understand what it's all about. Idryll forces are assaulting the Enterprise. They need to die, but shields, advanced weaponry and sheer numbers are on their side. To begin, Munroe and the hazard team move through some of the vessel's many decks clearing out disrespectful boarding parties who forgot to take off their shoes by igniting fires. Not so much letting fellow crew members die is also part of this mission. Officers and enlisted men are important. Your team and Starfleet personnel aren't really expendable, but don't expect to be constantly worrying about other people while you're slaughtering those stupid enough to cross the mighty Federation. As with most of the game, you begin with a clear assignment that involves killing everyone. Fortunately for you and unfortunately for the characters of EF2, the assignment quickly changes to something far more complex and difficult.

A post to the Blue's News Message Board by Digitalo's Vic DeLeon has word that a patch is in the works to address a couple of issues that have surfaced in the new Devastation multiplayer demo:"Digitalo is working on a patch which will address most of the technical, gameplay, and audio issues that have been reported in the Devastation MP Demo within the past eighteen hours. It's a little too soon to construct a valid ETA yet, but rest assured that the team is thoroughly committed to this, and will work as fast as they can to resolve as much as possible, as quickly as possible, for all versions of the game, demo and retail.
We appreciate all the feedback, and encourage you to continue posting your issues in the DevastationGame.com forums. Please make sure to be as specific as possible, and provide us with your system specs every time you post a bug.
Thanks again for your support."

EA has released a new Battlefield 1942 map for free! The map is called Aberdeen and you can download it from here. Operation Aberdeen is an epic tank battle set deep in the deserts of North Africa. Soldiers will need to control both outpost points, and the points surrounding the central town to claim victory. Similar to Coral Sea in design, Operation Aberdeen combat focuses on one particular vehicle type -- tanks. That isn't to say you won't find an artillery piece or two of course.

German-based Crytek was at the Game Developers Conference expo with a small exhibit showing off the CryEngine, their advance game graphics engine being used for their upcoming first person shooter Far Cry from publisher Ubi Soft. HomeLAN was treated to a special closed door private demo of the game's engine and has posted up their impressions. Here's a snip:"The game's physics engine has gotten more refined since our last E3 demo. All characters and objects move and react instantly in the demo to outside stimulus. We saw some bookcases that the Crytek team member shot up and saw individual books falling off, each reacting to each other, the bookcases and the wall. Objects also move down holes in the deformable terrain that the CryEngine also support. Finally we saw something that blew us away; a dead character actually floating realistically in the water. The Crytek team member even moved the player character on top of the dead character in the water and the dead body moved and floated accordingly."

If your computer locks up after updating to the new PB version while playing on a RtCW PB Server, then enter "/pb_system 1" into your RtCW console when you are NOT connected to a server (i.e. from the game's main menu before trying to join an online server). GameSpot has posted an article called Microsoft's big PC plans where they chat with Dean Lester, the head of Microsoft's Windows Graphics and Gaming division, to hear about the software giant's major new project to make the PC a better gaming platform. Here's a snip:"Before saying too much about where Microsoft is going, it's important to know where the platform stands. We've seen major releases of DirectX nearly every year since the standard debuted in the early days of Windows 95. Lester revealed that DirectX 9 packs enough features to be future-proof and is a temporary stopping place for DX development. ATI, Nvidia, and other hardware companies have spelled out their road maps in enough detail that DX9 has previously unannounced support for all the next-generation graphics features, and as a result Microsoft doesn't expect to release another major DirectX update for a couple of years."

You can read more about Resident Evil Zero here.
Videogame publisher Capcom has launched a special telephone helpline for consumers scared from playing its latest title Resident Evil Zero.
Available now, the line has been designed explicitly to offer comfort and reassurance to terrified gamers. Players simply ring up and listen to the two-minute recorded message scripted by a top psychologist. Once the call is completed, they should feel much more calm.
Resident Evil Zero, which will be released tomorrow (March 7th 2003), is the latest in the series of successful horror games. It is available exclusively on Nintendo Game Cube and available to players aged 15 and over.
"It's our duty to look after our consumers properly," said Ben Le Rougetel, Capcom spokesperson. "Resident Evil Zero is a ridiculously scary game. We want players to know help is at hand if they become too frightened. The phone line's message is simple: it's important to realise that this is just a game. Fear is all the mind, and that's what we want our players to remember."

Here's the ress release:Global videogame publishing powerhouse, Codemasters, announced today that the company¹s stealth-based, first-person shooter, IGI2: Covert Strike, has shipped to North American retail outlets nationwide - with a SRP of $39.99. The sequel to developer Innerloop Studios AS¹ award-winning Project IGI: Institute for Geotactical Intelligence, IGI2: Covert Strike boasts an action-packed single player campaign featuring enhanced AI; a diverse range of weaponry; and a newly implemented save system.
Players take on the role of British covert operative, David Jones, a former SAS soldier now working for the secret U.S. military organization, codenamed OIGI¹.
