Public Enemy Mod for HL ....
Posted by [Frag-girlie] @ 9:46 AM MDT Wednesday, April 30, 2003 [Comment on news]

Spotted on Blue's News that the debut release of the Public Enemy teamplay mod for Half-Life is now available.

"PE takes part in a dark future - which we know from books, cartoons, movies and games like BladeRunner, ShadowRun, Cyperpunk, Syndicate (Wars) or Deus Ex. It is not a high-technology world like Star Wars, Star Trek or other movies or series which have already colonized whole worlds; it is not a science-fiction typically. It is more a neorealist, dark world."

Vietcong Review ....
Posted by [Frag-girlie] @ 7:24 AM MDT Wednesday, April 30, 2003 [Comment on news]

GameBiz has posted a review of Vietcong. Here's a nibblet on the graphics:

"For the most part in Vietcong textures are decent but for some reason Illusion Softworks have used an outdated game engine and you will notice the frame rate chops. It is sometimes difficult to run and moving the cursor can cause serious frame rate issues. Character modelling also suffers not the smooth character animations that I would expect."

PlanetSide Preview ....
Posted by [Frag-girlie] @ 7:21 AM MDT Wednesday, April 30, 2003 [Comment on news]

Gamers Europe has posted a preview of PlanetSide. Here's a bit to get you going:

"PlanetSide promises to mix EverQuest and Quake/Doom (depends on which you prefer) – hence the MMOFPS title given to it. It probably helps a lot that the developers of PlanetSide, Verant Interactive, are the same guys who made EverQuest so they know what they’re doing and they know how to make a compelling online game. The game is set in the far-away future (ain’t it always the way?) where humanity has colonized the planet Auraxis, which was discovered when humans entered through a wormhole. A few years later religious artefacts are found on Auraxis which people quickly discover can be used to rebirth people – that is to say, bring them back to life. This paves the way for practical immortality and, of course, the breakdown of organised civilisation."

Day Of Defeat Interview ....

HomeLAN has posted an interview with Valve Software's John Morello II and Doug Lombardi as they talk about the popular WWII multiplayer HL mod, Day of Defeat, and its upcoming retail release. Here's a s nip:

HomeLAN - What were the main goals when the decision was made to make Day of Defeat a full-fledged stand-alone game?

Doug Lombardi - No different than our goals with any other game: Deliver a very approachable, high-quality product to as large an audience as possible. The DoD team had built a great foundation as a MOD, and that work and momentum made the process of "going retail" very easy.

Computer and Video Games has posted a hands-on preview of Painkiller, the upcoming shooter from Polish developer People Can Fly. The preview is based on getting to play with a pre-alpha build of the game. Here's a snip:

"Right from the off, it's obvious that Painkiller certainly is an all-action first-person shooter much like Serious Sam - albeit with a darker atmosphere. Enemies are thrown at you in a numerous and constant manner, meaning continuous use of the trigger finger on a gun with a bit of an H.R. Giger thing going on."

According to this article posted over at Yahoo Financial News, we will be getting a sequel to Max Payne. We will however have to wait until the first half of 2005.

"Take-Two's Rockstar unit is working on 10 new games, only two of which have been announced, Lapin says. They are "Manhunt," an action game akin to the movie "The Fugitive," and "The Warriors," a gang drama based on the 1979 movie. "Manhunt" is set for release in October and "The Warriors" and a "Max Payne" sequel are due out in the first half of 2005."

Postal 2 Review....

WorthPlaying has posted a review of Postal 2. Here's a nibblet:

"Having transitioned from an isometric 2D perspective to a first-person 3D perspective you will now be able to see from the eyes of the Postal Dude as he roams the town of Paradise, Arizona. All the basic gameplay dynamics found in most FPS’ are present here. Postal Dude can run, jump, strafe, utilize a bunch of different weapons, unzip his pants and urinate on terrified bystanders. Oh, I guess that last bit isn’t very common in most games, huh? Yah, I was pretty taken aback the first time I tapped ‘R’ to hear the unmistakable sound of pants being unzipped and I was even more stunned to witness my on-screen character unload a yellow stream of liquid when I held down the “shoot” button. My first instinct was to pee on a pit bull (not a good idea by the way), but after taking a wiz on a dozen or so pedestrians and watching them all flee in horror, the novelty soon wore off."

GameSpot has posted a review of Red Faction II. Here's what they had to say in closing:

"Red Faction II is a pretty good shooter overall, offering up a short but sweet single-player campaign and a decent botmatch mode for a little extra lasting value. The game's not long on looks or replay value (especially since it has no multiplayer play), but it's got no shortage of action."

XGR has posted a Postal 2 Q&A with Running With Scissors' Vince Desi where they talk about their recent Unreal engine powered first person shooter. Here's a nibblet:

XGR WooF- What is so different from Postal to Postal 2? What is your favorite part to the new release?

Vince Desi - Asides for the obvious 2D to 3D, rag doll physics and liquid physics, 150+ npc's, Gary Coleman, several thousand lines of dialogue, champ my dog and pissing, not much. To be honest over the development period I’ve had different favorites, the gas can, the shovel, the cat silencer, they all work for me.

Painkiller Preview ....
Posted by [Frag-girlie] @ 2:06 PM MDT Wednesday, April 23, 2003 [Comment on news]

Gamers Europe has posted a preview of Painkiller, where they take a look at this upcoming first person shooter. Here's a snip from their intro to get you started:

"If I said Painkiller you might say Aspirin or if you fancy, paracetamol. I know I would. If I told you Painkiller was actually this new game you’d ask me about it. To answer your question, Painkiller is a game where you run around as a mercenary in first person mode, killing undead chaps while you look for a religious artefact. This adds the adventure element to the game, as you run around looking for the zombie you mightn’t have mashed up enough. Does he have it? Otherwise, shoot it if it moves. You can’t go wrong if you stick to a strategy like that. Between shooting things, you experience suspense and horror. The levels are dark and moody and the next enemy could come from anywhere. Best reload your guns while you have the chance."

Chrome Preview....
Posted by [Frag-girlie] @ 1:54 PM MDT Wednesday, April 23, 2003 [Comment on news]

ELiTeD has posted a new hands on preview of Chrome, the upcoming sci-fi fps from Techland and Strategy First. Here's a snip:

"The planets are simply stunning, but the weapons and vehicles are blocky, and well, you wonder if they had the same graphics guy working on them. The weapon loadout lets you choose which weapons you want to take with you. Mind you all of the weapons were not available to choose from, but many appropriate to the mission were. You can also let the computer choose the set up for you. The amount you can carry is varied. It isn't by weight, but represented by empty slots (see pic below). So far I have played with a few pistols, sniper rifle, and a couple of automatics. They shoot nice and recoil realistically. The sniper rifle is by far my favorite. Health, grenades, ammo, and binoculars are other handy items to tote around. You can also search the dead's body and take their weapons and items as long as you have the capability to carry the load."

Devastation Review....
Posted by [Frag-girlie] @ 9:34 PM MDT Tuesday, April 22, 2003 [Comment on news]

Our very own Marty has submitted his latest review for our enjoyment, this time of Digitalo's recently released FPS, Devastation. Here's a snip:

"Weaponry, to what I have seen, covers the standard FPS loadout, but does include some other rather nice pieces of equipment from harpoon explosives to digital rifles! From what I have played it would seem that the weaponry is somewhat unfairly balanced. You will not get bored with the selection of weaponry however, as the further you progress in the game the better it gets!"

Medal of Honor Allied Assault Breakthrough ....
Posted by [Frag-girlie] @ 9:26 AM MDT Tuesday, April 22, 2003 [Comment on news]

EA Hits the Shores of North Africa with Medal of Honor Allied Assault Breakthrough is the press release announcing another expansion pack for MoH: AA. The add-on is centered around the war's North African/Sicilian campaign, and is expected to be released this fall. Here's a bit more:

"As U.S. Army Sergeant John Baker, players join the battle at Kasserine Pass in North Africa, race to capture Messina in Sicily, and finally repel the German army at the historic battle of Monte Battaglia in the heart of Italy. Armed with a new arsenal of weapons, players will fight alone and with squad mates as they rush to stop the Axis powers.

The multiplayer game has been enhanced with the addition of Liberation Mode. In this mode, defeated players must be rescued by surviving teammates to continue the fight. In addition, players can drive tanks, artillery spotters can call in artillery strikes, and minesweepers can defuse mines. Players can also choose from American, British, Italian, and German skins in all multiplayer modes."

Tim Sweeney Interview....
Posted by [Frag-girlie] @ 9:16 AM MDT Tuesday, April 22, 2003 [Comment on news]

Firing Squad has posted an interview with Epic's Tim Sweeney, where they talk about his work with 64-bit processors and the impact the new technology could have on gaming. Here's a snip:

FiringSquad: What kind of performance benefits are you seeing with the 64-bit codebase and AMD's 64-bit processor in general? Are there any additional advantages to 64-bit?

TS: The extra registers can give you a significant performance gain in loops which currently have to spill over into memory. The on-die memory controller reduces the path for uncached reads significantly, which is a huge win for applications like Unreal which are memory-limited. On the other hand, pointers grow from 4 bytes to 8, so traversal of linked data structures takes an additional bandwidth hit. I think you'll probably see a clock-for-clock improvement over Athlon XP of around 30% in applications like Unreal that do a significant amount of varied computational work over a large dataset.

Vietcong Review....
Posted by [Frag-girlie] @ 12:07 PM MDT Friday, April 11, 2003 [Comment on news]

HomeLan has posted a review of Vietcong, the recent fps from developers Pterodon and Illusion Softworks that is set in the Vietnam War. Here is a snip:

In addition to the structured single player campaign, Vietcong has a console-like quick mission mode that allows you to just charge in and fight VC enemies in several maps. More maps and weapons are unlocked as you complete single player missions in the structured campaign. Once you finish a mission in the single player campaign you can also replay it to your hearts content. Finally, Vietcong offers up a robust multiplayer feature with several gameplay modes(including a welcome co-op mode) and maps to play on and for the most part you should get a solid gameplay experience if you have a broadband connection. Again the recently released patch for the game should help improve the multiplayer experience for players.

Red Faction II Review ....
Posted by [Frag-girlie] @ 11:44 AM MDT Friday, April 11, 2003 [Comment on news]

ActionVault has posted up a Red Faction II review. Here's a snip:

"What RF II does incredibly well is make for an easy pick-up-and play experience. The controls are about as stripped down and simple as possible for a first-person shooter. There is no lean and there is no walk or run, but there are fire, alternate fire and dedicated grenade buttons, meaning it's all about the combat. Your focus is on killing baddies, and the controls allow for that, but nothing more.

Filled with action and intent on keeping players fighting, level progression is one area where the game occasionally hangs up. For the most part, the level scripting and event triggers do a fine job of pushing the player forward, but every so often there's a point where the game doesn't offer quite enough of a cue towards the next path. Unfortunately, these also seem to frequently coincide with spots where enemies continuously spawn, so you have to waste ammo fending off a continuous wave of thugs while trying to get your mind around where to go next. Worst of all are one or two points where the enemies in question are the suicidal Minority Report spider-bots. These enemies, I think, we could do without -- they're too small and fast-moving to effectively defend against, even if you have excellent reflexes. And they explode when they hit you."

Activision has officially announced Call of Duty, a new Quake III-engine powered first person shooter set in World War II. The title is slated for release later this year and has not yet been rated by the ESRB.

"The first title in the Call of Duty series is a gritty, authentic World War II action game for the PC that is being developed by Infinity Ward, a newly formed studio that includes 22 of the individuals who previously developed Medal of Honor: Allied Assault(TM). Players assume the role of different characters from multiple sides of the Allied forces and experience the bonding and brutality of war as they fight along side their squad mates through a variety of missions, including battlefield assaults, search and rescue, stealth, sabotage, vehicle chases and tank battles. Heeding the call of duty, gamers step into the boots of a U.S. paratrooper, a British commando and a Russian infantryman as they take on the Nazi War machine through pivotal World War II battles and authentic military campaigns.

Postal 2 Review ....
Posted by [Frag-girlie] @ 10:20 AM MDT Wednesday, April 9, 2003 [Comment on news]

HomeLan has posted a review of Postal 2. Here's a snip from the intro to get you started:

"You have to hand it to the folks at Running With Scissors; they spare no expense to try and offend every conceivable group and race with Postal 2. The original Postal did much the same thing when it was released many years ago but that game was a poorly designed title by any standard. For the sequel, Running With Scissors decided to up the ante a bit by licensing Epic’s Unreal engine and by putting in some interesting gameplay ideas that make Postal 2 more than just your normal first person shooter, but some technical and gameplay flaws tend to undermine the gameplay at time."

Delta Force: Black Hawk Down Review ....

One of my good pals Marty has served up a review of Novalogic's recently released Delta Force: Black Hawk Down for us here at PCShooter.com. Here's a snip:

"...Whilst running around with my M16 in my hands and my night vision goggles giving me a nice green tinted view in the dark I was very much impressed with the sounds I could hear through my 5.1 sound setup. Gunfire and bombs going off in the distance, the sound of the Black Hawk passing by overhead was just amazing. It really gave me the impression I was on the battlefield with every bullet grazing my shoulder."
Check it out! Thanks Marty... :)
