Postal 2 Review....
Posted by [Frag-girlie] @ 11:06 AM MDT Monday, May 19, 2003 [Comment on news]

Beyond Unreal has posted a Postal 2 review which they have also loaded up with screenies for you. Here's a nibblet:

"You should know by now that anything using the Unreal engine has the potential to be a gorgeous looking game, and Postal 2 is no exception. While the engine isn't quite up to the 'everything is a dynamic, interactive object' state yet, you can break windows, move crates and containers, etc. Most of the 'levels' (sections of town) are done quite well. It's a far cry from the original Postal, which had the gameplay, but not they eye candy.

There are like 100+ NPCs floating around town, women, men, cats, dogs. Virtually all of them are well done, with acceptable detail. There's even a mod floating around replacing the girls' panties with, well, something more 'au natural'. I didn't have any meaningful negative feelings concerning how the character models turned out."

Planetside Preview....

LoadedInc has posted a preview of Planetside after getting to see it at last week's E3. Here's a snip:

"Visually speaking Planetside is looking great from a MMO point of view. The continents terrain is varied from snowy mountain peaks to bubbling pools of lava. Environmental changes such as rain and sandstorms help give the game atmosphere and it draws you in. The game also features transitions of night to day. The sunrise and sunsets are particularly stunning. Over certain continents you can look up at the sky and take note of the moons overhead. Vehicles, aircraft, and infantry are wonderfully patterned with their side’s particular colors and insignia."

Half-Life 2 Impressions....
Posted by [Frag-girlie] @ 9:29 AM MDT Saturday, May 17, 2003 [Comment on news]

HomeLAN has posted its impressions of Valve Software's Half-Life 2 demo that was shown at ATI's E3 booth this week. Here is a nibblet:

"Valve Software’s Erik Johnson was in charge of the lengthy 28 minute demo presentation, which began with a few minutes of Source engine demo features. Valve’s proprietary 3D graphics engine has already scored one third party license and its easy to see why. From the accurate facial expressions on Half-Life 2’s version of the G-Man to the ragdoll physics of the game’s objects to the game’s use of texture properties (we even saw how a character could be made out of water), the engine is more than able to keep up with the rest of the increasingly crowed game graphics crowd. One final Source demo showed the impressive internal camera system that can be used for security cameras in the game."

Will Rock Preview....
Posted by [Frag-girlie] @ 9:27 AM MDT Saturday, May 17, 2003 [Comment on news]

This past Wednesday, Worthplaying posted a Will Rock preview that I didn't tell you about. It's got a handful of screenies included as well. Here's a snip from their intro to get you started:

"When’s the last time you actually had to stifle a series of chuckles while playing a game, or even let out a maniacal laugh? While many games of today take the player and put them in serious plotlines or dire situations and set a gloomy mood overall, Will Rock differs in the fact that although the plotline “could” be serious if looked at in a certain light, its sole purpose is to be a conveyor of pure fun and is a throwback to the times when games took any plot they could to give the player a good time."

You can grab the file here.

Enter the Matrix Music Interview....
Posted by [Frag-girlie] @ 3:51 PM MDT Friday, May 16, 2003 [Comment on news]

Action Vault has posted an Enter the Matrix music interview where they chat with Erik Lundborg about scoring, orchestrating and composing for Shiny's eagerly awaited game. Here's a taste:

Action Vault: To what extent was the computer game taken into account during the creation of the movie score? Were there any significant differences between scoring and orchestrating for the movie and the game?

Erik Lundborg: It was assumed from the start of the project that the computer game would inhabit the same musical sound-world as that of the films and the animes. Game music is designed to enhance and sustain action, while film music contains a varied range of emotional experience. In film, the entire experience is an unfolding; the music is typically composed in smaller sequences and is ultimately combined into one long wave with crests and troughs, scrupulously following the action on the screen.

The image is kaleidoscopic in game music; it is designed to fit various actions - the walk, the chase, the fight - and various moods - impending danger, suspense, victory. Each is scored differently within the many levels of the game and is typically longer, lasting 1:30 to five minutes in duration. The music must enhance the game play and be able to be endlessly combined in different ways, depending on the actions of the player. In game playing, the player has a hand in creating the ultimate experience. As to the differences in scoring and orchestrating, there is no difference. They occupy the same special space in the cosmos.

Unreal Tournament 2004 Impressions ....
Posted by [Frag-girlie] @ 3:27 PM MDT Friday, May 16, 2003 [Comment on news]

HomeLan has posted some impressions after seeing Unreal Tournament 2004 at E3. Here's a nibblet:

"When Unreal Tournament 2004 was rumored to be in the works, some speculated that this would simply be another way of saying “Gold Edition” or “Game of the Year Edition” with a few new bits of content that have beed added on top of an existing multiplayer game. Well, we can officially tell you that UT2004 may have the same content at UT2K3 but as Epic Games’s Steve Polge told us at E3 this week during our behind-closed-doors demo, there is more new content added to UT2004 than there was in the entire game of UT2003."

Pain Killer Impressions ....
Posted by [Frag-girlie] @ 3:21 PM MDT Friday, May 16, 2003 [Comment on news]

Gamers Pulse has posted some brief impressions and a few screenshots of Dreamcatcher's upcoming shooter, Pain Killer. Here's a snip from their intro:

"The battle between Heaven and Hell has never been so gruesome or beautiful than in the new FPS by Dreamcatcher. I had a chance to sit down and get a hands on preview of this title and I was amazed. With their own PAIN engine, and a great storyline, Painkiller is shaping up to be a great title. There were barrels rolling down staircases in a realistic fashion, rag doll effects are to die for as well, and the lighting is stunning.

When I was brought to the booth for Painkiller, I truthfully had not heard much of this new title. After a few minutes of watching the game being played I wanted more. The story begins with revealing that you were in a gruesome car accident and you and your wife were killed. You ended up in Purgatory and your wife in Heaven. Somehow they find out you are a good fighter. So heaven adds you to their force in a battle that is brewing between heaven and Hell. The story is basically a way to get you into a battle with demons. From there they have a number of arenas that will be for multiplayer and a number of maps that are all amazingly textured."

Nitro Family Q&A....
Posted by [Frag-girlie] @ 12:50 PM MDT Monday, May 12, 2003 [Comment on news]

XGR has posted a Q&A, in article style, with Delphieye's Bruce Kim where he talks about their upcoming Serious Engine first person shooter Nitro Family. Here's a snip:

Having a hard time finding a new and unique first person shooter? Delphieye’s Nitro Family could indeed be what you’ve been looking for. The Korean game developers are currently hard at work on their FPS title that promises out of the ordinary game play coupled with hard-edged arcade action.

“Basically our main goal was to create a title with refreshing game play, not too dark and serious like the Doom series. Behind this basic goal, there was this nostalgia with playing classic arcade action games of late 80’s, which was so over-the-top and featured impressive attack patterns and enemies,” explained Kim. “With such concept, we came up the idea that a player could use more than one weapon simultaneously and juggle enemies in the air like fighting action games.”

Max Payne 2: The Fall Of Max Payne ....
Posted by [Frag-girlie] @ 12:31 PM MDT Monday, May 12, 2003 [Comment on news]

Rockstar Games, the publishing division of Take-Two Interactive Software, has sent word that Max Payne 2: The Fall Of Max Payne is in development. The game is being done by Remedy Entertainment and is expected to be on retail shelves in the Fall of 2003.

When Max Payne debuted in July 2001 as an award-winning, best-selling PC game, it revolutionized the action genre with its cinematic combat sequences fueled by the groundbreaking use of slow motion and compulsive narrative-driven gameplay. Later that year, console audiences were equally impressed by the stylish, urban, revenge-driven story of a fugitive cop with nothing to lose and Max Payne went on to achieve "Greatest Hits" status on PlayStation2 and "Platinum Hits" recognition on Xbox. Now, the highly anticipated Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne for the PC will be unveiled to an extremely select audience by invitation only at this year's E3.

Painkiller Preview ....
Posted by [Frag-girlie] @ 12:07 PM MDT Tuesday, May 6, 2003 [Comment on news]

Yesterday The Adrenaline Vault posted a preview of Painkiller, DreamCatcher Interactive/People Can Fly's upcoming action/shooter. Here's a nibblet:

"For this preview, the Adrenaline Vault was sent one of the 20 levels promised to be in the full retail release. In fairness, it's difficult to get a solid idea of what a finished game is going to be like based on a single level; however, what I did see is very promising. For starters, even though Painkiller isn't due out until September, People Can Fly's proprietary engine is exceptionally solid. Problems that plague other 3D titles like clipping, major textural problems, sound anomalies and annoying crashes are pleasantly absent. In addition to solid coding, the beta offering was, quite simply, fun to play."

Breed Preview ....
Posted by [Frag-girlie] @ 11:52 AM MDT Tuesday, May 6, 2003 [Comment on news]

PC.IGN has posted a Breed preview after a hands-on look at Brat Design's upcoming FPS. Here's a snip from their intro to get you going:

"First person shooters are a dime dozen these days. Okay, they're actually more like 300 dollars a dozen, but who's counting. They're all over the damn place, so finding a special little corner of the market is important and CDV and Brat Designs are hoping that their upcoming FPS Breed will carve a little niche out for itself. Hoping to be something of a Halo killer, Breed combines all of the fun of fighting on foot and in vehicles with the ability to move from the space orbiting Earth down to the planet smoothly. If the game lives up to its potential, this could be one of the next great games of 2003."

Call of Duty Q&A....
Posted by [Frag-girlie] @ 7:09 PM MDT Thursday, May 1, 2003 [Comment on news]

GameSpot has posted a Call of Duty Q&A where they catch up with Vince Zampella of Infinity Ward and talk about their upcoming WWII first person shooter. Here's a snippet:

GS: What can you say about current multiplayer plans for the game?

VZ: Call of Duty's multiplayer is really three games in one. Depending on the map, the Allies are American, British, or Russian. Each matchup is completely different, with each side having strengths and weaknesses based on actual historical differences. For example, the Russian short weapons are superior to the German ones, but the German long-range and support weapons are superior to the Russian ones.

BF1942 Secret Weapons Q&A....

HomeLan has posted a BF1942 Secret Weapons Q&A where they talk with Mikael Rudberg about development on the upcoming Secret Weapons expansion for Battlefield 1942. Here's a snip:

HomeLAN - What can you tell us about the new maps that will be found in Secret Weapons?

Mikael Rudberg - For the most part the maps were selected for their history of secret operations. As with the vehicles, we wanted to add a new dimension to the Battlefield experience. The maps were designed with the notion of focusing battle and getting players into the mix. It’s more fun being in a battle than driving or walking around looking for one. With the new maps, the player has to make a conscious decision to avoid battle rather than spending time looking for it.
