Painkiller Preview....

GGMania has posted a hands-on preview of Painkiller, the upcoming first person shooter from People Can Fly and Dreamcatcher. Here's a snippet:"Graphically, the game is very nice. Painkiller is developed on a in-house engine called PAIN that handles everything very well. There are an interiors as well as exteriors levels, explosions realistically blow up monsters (to be exact, explosions send bodies flying in all directions...) and they have solid rag doll physics when they die, weapon and lighting effects are pretty solid too. Of course, the blood is everywhere :P
The sounds and music were exceptionally good considering the early state of this beta. Nothing disturbs your adrenaline level better than some good hard rock/metal, and this is what Painkiller offers during the battles. It really reminded me of the early days of Quake and the killer rock tunes they used in that game. The sound effects for the weapons and monsters were all excellent."

Gamers Saga has posted a Psychotoxic Q&A where they chat with Thorsten Feld, producer on CDV's upcoming post-apocalyptic shooter. They discuss the game's storyline, characters, setting, and more. Here's a nibblet:GS: Could you explain what Psychotoxic is all about for those who don't know?
TF: It is about the Apocalypse, and the end of mankind in the year 2020. The 4th rider of the Apocalypse has woken up and is about to exercise his evil power in the whole wide world. Civil wars break out all over the world and mankind goes wild, killing each other. Just one human being - Angie Prophet - can stop the Rider and save the world from its fall into the eternal darkness. What is so special about this young woman? Angie is half angel and half human, and blessed with supernatural powers. For instance, she has healing powers, knows how to become a part of other people’s dreams, and things like that. To bring the Rider down, Angie has to fight her way through 22 levels, such as Brooklyn and the Central Park, or through fantasy worlds like a gloomy cathedral or a battlefield.

The Armchair Empire has posted a Chrome Q&A where they talk with Techland about progress on Chrome, their upcoming sci-fi first-person shooter. Here's a snip:AE: How will Chrome differentiate itself from all the other first-person shooters on the market?
Techland: Several elements differentiate Chrome from other first-person shooters. First of all, our game is a combination of a dynamic FPS and a tactical game, in which cyberimplants enable the player to choose from many different playing styles. This brings us to another factor – great freedom for the player. In each mission, the player is equipped with a set of implants, specialized equipment, various weapons and vehicles. What the player uses during the mission is totally up to him. Fighting skills and imagination of the player are the greatest limitations in the game. Another interesting factor is that the locations are so extensive, that without using proper equipment (scanners, compass, etc.) most of the players would get lost in no time. Game environment is definitely another distinctive aspect of Chrome. Our game does not include any significantly limited terrain. We put a lot of effort in creating very extensive, diverse and visually appealing locations.

Montreal, Quebec. June, 19 2003 – Publisher Strategy First and Developer Techland announced today that the release date for their upcoming PC First-Person Tactical Shooter game, CHROME, has been changed from early to late summer 2003.
The decision to push back the release of CHROME was based on player feedback from the recent beta test.“The Chrome community as well as the development team are dedicated to making Chrome the best game it can be,” said George Chastain, Senior Producer for Strategy First. “We’ve decided that a couple more months of dev time would allow us to polish and include more multiplayer content that players have asked for, so we had no choice but to push it back. After all the games we make are for them!”
CHROME has been in development at Techland’s Polish-based studio for almost 2 years now and it made its North America debut at this year’s E3. Atari will release CHROME for the PC. For more information about the game please visit www.chromethegame.com or www.strategyfirst.com.

Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory Review....

Stratos Group has posted a review of Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. Here's a nibblet:"What's more, each of the six maps in ET have different objectives for each side, and until you fully understand what these goals are, the hustle and bustle of your teammates will be difficult to comprehend. Adding to the chaos is the voice-over command, which automatically warns you when your team or the enemy has completed an objective, and issues instructions on what to do next. Until you've played each map often enough to know where everything is, these commands are somewhat meaningless, and you'll probably wander around the map getting into firefights with similarly confused players on the other team. The game is only a week old, and this kind of makeshift deathmatch is still fairly common on most of the servers I've visited. As time goes by, most players are getting better at recognizing the hotspots on the map and focusing their attentions there and, as such, the gameplay is becoming tighter and more exciting. You could almost call it deathmatch with a purpose; the maps are designed so that it never takes more than fifteen seconds or so for a player to get back into action after respawning, so that there is often a constant gunfight raging near whatever the current objective is. Adding to this is the very well-balanced interplay between gun damage and health levels; players will survive gunfire just long enough to make firefights exciting, but not long enough to make them frustrating."

Loaded Inc. has posted a preview of Chrome. Here's a snip:"One of the biggest promises that Techland are making is that the game will have millions of polygons and still run well on a "normal" machine. While not groundbreaking, the graphics are commendable in this preview version. Your character looks decent, and on closer inspection most of the enemies are pretty well detailed. I noticed some slow down when taking this version for a spin but this is most likely a result of having a preview build and not the final code."
UT2004 Interview....

[Frag-girlie] @ 11:03 AM MDT Friday, June 13, 2003 [Comment on news]
4unrealers.com has posted an interview with Epic's Tim Sweeney about UT2004. Here's a taste:MooN: Aside from all these argumentations I like you to talk about UT2004. In spite of everything, is a big joy to the unreal community to read news about it. Between all the new features, which are the most important and why?
Tim: The two things we're most excited about are the Assault game type, which was the most popular single-player mode in the original 1999 version of Unreal Tournament, and the Onslaught game type. In Assault, one team is attacking the other team's bases or fortifications, and has to achieve a set of objectives to win, while the other team carries out a defense. The gameplay ends up being very structured and unique, and is great in multiplayer or when just playing single-player against the bots. Onslaught features a large set of vehicles you can drive around (and sometimes even fly). It's somewhat remniscent of Battlefield 1942's Conquest mode, but with the speed and futuristic weapons of UT2003.
Game Market To Be Worth $35.8 Billion By 2007....

[Frag-girlie] @ 10:55 AM MDT Friday, June 13, 2003 [Comment on news]
Gameindustry.biz has posted an article about a new study by market analysts PricewaterhouseCoopers, saying the videogames industry will grow in net worth to $35.8 billion by 2007, fueled by major advances in online gaming thanks to broadband, and in wireless gaming thanks to new mobile phone technologies.
The growth predicted by the study amounts to an 11 per cent compound rate, significantly ahead of the growth rate for the global entertainment and media industry as a whole, which is expected to grow at a compound rate of some 4.8 per cent over the same period.
Even at $35.8 billion, however, the videogame industry represents a mere drop in the ocean of entertainment and media - with the market as a whole set to be worth $1.4 trillion in 2007.

That's Friday, June 6 at 6:00 p.m. PDT!

GameSpot has posted a preview of Painkiller, the upcoming arcade shooter from People Can Fly, and have loaded it up with twenty-eight new screenshots! Here's their intro to get you started:"Not every game that goes for over-the-top action can pull it off, but Painkiller seems to be on the right track. In development at Polish studio People Can Fly, Painkiller takes the frantic action formula of classic first-person shooters and the more recent Serious Sam and adds explosive physics effects. It's one thing to have a group of big, tattooed bikers charge at you with tommy guns blazing, but it's definitely something else to send them all flying crazily through the air with a volley of rockets. This insane carnage takes place in huge, good-looking locations throughout some of the not-so-nice parts of purgatory. However, the game doesn't focus on gruesome battles, but instead on fast-paced, addictive action, and from what we've seen, Painkiller might just succeed."

The Adrenaline Vault has posted a S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Oblivion Lost Q&A where they chat with Oleg Yavorsky of GSC Game World. Here's a snip:AV: Tell us about the team's visit to the Chernobyl site. What elements did this bring to the game?
OY: We went to Chernobyl twice to search for and collect materials. It was quite an experience. You start realizing in the fullest sense what human negligence and carelessness can lead to. Frankly speaking, some places were simply too dangerous to pass through, while others were padlocked to keep visitors out. Fortunately, what we brought back is invaluable. The materials give S.T.A.L.K.E.R. real-life textures - over 60 percent of the game's buildings and environments have been modeled from those in the Zone - and a unique atmosphere.

Enter the Matrix Review....

Firing Squad has posted a review of Enter the Matrix. Here's a snippet:"...Of course, something like this is expected in a game based on the movie franchise that introduced us to bullet time and gave us psychedelic 360-degree camera effects. But Shiny is a couple of years too late in its implementation, seeing as Max Payne brought these sorts of effects to computer gaming in 2001. Everyone’s favorite noirish cop-killer did a better job at integrating them into gameplay as well. Where you actually felt pressed in Max Payne, and were truly grateful that you could slow things down every once in a while, the option is pure frill in Enter the Matrix. Aside from the cinematic coolness of defying the laws of physics, there is no need to use Focus. Enemies can be taken out by running up to them and clicking the punch and kick buttons until they drop. Or by whipping out a weapon and gunning them down. You don’t even have to worry about taking damage with this approach to combat, since health is rapidly regenerated by standing still."

GameSpot has posted a Star Trek Elite Force II Preview of the upcoming Trekkie shooter sequel in the works at Ritual Entertainment. Here's a snip:"The game's 11 missions are broken up into three to seven sublevels each, and a number of levels in the missions we played concluded with fights, either defending a VIP or attacking a powerful boss. Much of the game's action sequences have a fast-paced, run-and-gun quality, which may not be surprising, considering that the game is powered by the Quake III engine, physics and all. The developer has also seen fit to add a certain amount of replay value to the otherwise linear levels by including secret areas and hidden starship icons--collect enough icons, and you'll be able to unlock a few extra maps."
