Planetside Update....
Posted by [luckee] @ 4:50 AM MDT Wednesday, July 31, 2002 [Comment on news]

planetside.station has posted up an update on the long awaited massive multiplayer game planetside. Here’s a snip:

It's that time again. What has the dev team been up to? Well...in a word...lots.

The Battle Experience and Certification system is going in this week. The orbital drop pods are functioning now and will be in this week's internal playtest. Hacking is going in this week, so doors and terminals will no longer be open to all comers. We got Revive and all the healing/repairing functions working last week and the week before, so Medics are working correctly now. All the weapons, all the vehicles, and all the bases are now in the game also. All 10 continents have been constructed (but are being tweaked ferociously now), and the Warp Gates will interconnect all the continents soon. The Grief system is fully in now and we're starting work on Squads and Outfits soon. Oh yeah...and the individual Empire abilities for the Heavy Armors are in now also.

You can read the rest here.

SWAT: Urban Justice Preview....
Posted by [luckee] @ 4:42 AM MDT Wednesday, July 31, 2002 [Comment on news]

Gamespy.com has posted up a nice preview of SWAT: Urban Justice. here’s a snip:

"With SWAT 3 being so successful, it was natural for us to move on to another SWAT game," explains Cyrus Kanga, one of lead designers and art director on SWAT: Urban Justice. "People think it's SWAT 4, but it's not.

Urban Justice is a completely new sku. The main point we wanted to focus on is that the game is still SWAT, meaning there is still an emphasis on tactics, but the game is going to be much faster paced than before. We want Urban Justice to be a real, mass-market title. We want people to get into the game quicker. We wanted the characters to have more personality." Before you start freaking out that Sierra has gone soft with Urban Justice, that's not the case at all. In fact, the user is going to have access to more tactics, weapons, and gear than ever before. This is true urban warfare.

The development team also focused a lot on multiplayer. The team realized the importance of it and has worked hard to exceed the level of excitement and intensity of their previous games. This passion for great multiplayer gameplay, along with creating a whole new "vibe" for Urban Justice, has factored greatly in on how the team has went about creating the new game.

    Cant wait for this one

Navy SEALs Review ....
Posted by [Frag-girlie] @ 9:28 AM MDT Tuesday, July 30, 2002 [Comment on news]

Gamitopia has posted a very unfavorable review of ValueSoft's Navy SEALs. Here's a nibblet:

"While the game uses the LithTech engine, it's definitely not using the engine's full potential. The menu system is pretty plain and boring. The character models aren't too bad but the weapons could have looked better. There are a lot of boring textures used and the level design is so bad that it makes you just want to throw your hands in the air. Everything is so box-like and basic that it feels more like the game is in early development than an actual shipping product. As for the audio, there is no music to speak of in the game or even in the menu system, and there isn't much by way of sound effects either."

HomeLan has posteda Q&A with Ubi Soft Producer Chadi Lebbos where they chat about the forthcoming Unreal-powered tactical shooter, Raven Shield. Here's a snip:

HomeLAN - What other new gameplay elements will be put into Raven Shield?

Chadi Lebbos - We've added a new Quick order system to allow you to order them on-the-fly. You can tell them to Open, Frag, and Clear a door and then sit back and watch. Your team moves to the door, assumes a room entry formation, opens the door, leans into the doorway to throw a Frag grenade, and finally rush into the room in a methodical fashion to clear it. It's really impressive to watch them work.

AvP2: Primal Hunt Developer Diary, Volume I....
Posted by [Frag-girlie] @ 9:14 AM MDT Tuesday, July 30, 2002 [Comment on news]

Planet AVP has posted a developer's diary of AvP2: Primal Hunt. Here's their intro to get you started:

"Aliens versus Predator 2 is somewhat unique in the first person shoot world. Aside from the fact that there are 3 species that the player can experience, the detail in each plotline is more akin to what one might expect from a good book rather than a first person shooter.

At first glance, such details might not be apparent. After all, it is possible to skip each of the game’s cut scenes while playing. But on closer examination, the huge effort that Monolith put into making Aliens versus Predator 2 worthy of the name becomes apparent. When Fox first approached us about doing a single player expansion we were faced with the questions of how the story should continue, or should it continue at all?"

Western Digital's 200GB Disk....
Posted by [luckee] @ 5:06 PM MDT Monday, July 29, 2002 [Comment on news]

According to a story I saw over @ CNET.com, Western Digital will soon start shipping its latest 7200RPM Caviar harddrive which has no less than 200GB of space. here’s a snip:

The company began shipping the hard drive--part of its new family of Caviar drives ranging from 120GB to 200GB--in small numbers over the past week. The new machine, which spins at 7,200 revolutions per minute, will soon begin appearing at retail stores and online, and will be available in some new desktop PCs later this quarter.

The drive, which the company nicknamed Drivezilla, will give high-end consumer PCs a whopping 80GB more storage than most now have. The majority of top-of-the-line PCs come with 120GB drives, though most manufacturers offer desktop PCs that can fit two 120GB hard drives in order to offer more data storage capacity.

Western Digital expects that people who use their PCs to edit and store video and photos, or to perform other multimedia tasks, will want the new drive for its extra capacity. Storing large amounts of video, for example, quickly adds up on a hard drive. Compressed video takes up about 13GB of disk space per hour. Meanwhile, the new drive can also be used by workstations, which are heavy-duty desktops used for tasks such as creating mechanical designs.

Western Digital created Drivezilla by increasing the areal density, or the amount of data its drives can store per square inch. Drivezilla can stuff 66.7GB of data on each platter. A platter, which resembles a record or CD, is used to store data in a hard drive. Manufacturers stack the platters inside the drives in order to reach different capacities.

Who knows maybe well reach the 300 gig level by 2003?:)

Black Hawk Down Preview....
Posted by [luckee] @ 8:54 AM MDT Sunday, July 28, 2002 [Comment on news]

The boys over at ign.com have written a cool preview for the up coming Blackhawk Down game. here’s a snip:

We've already covered many other aspects of Novalogic's upcoming shooter. This week we interviewed producer Wes Eckhart and the two Subject Matter Experts, consultants who have a connection with the world the game emulates, and they all shared their thoughts on the state of the game. But as they say, the proof is in the playing. Fortunately, the gang at Novalogic were more than happy to put their own deadlines aside for a day and help us get our feet wet in the game's single and multiplayer modes. We also got the chance to head out to the motion capture session and we've got movies of that in our media section.

The day began with a meeting with lead artist Jason Monroe and art director Chris Tamburrino. The pair obviously have a great deal of enthusiasm for what they do and, rather than frustrating with us with a lot of discussion or orientation, they just jumped right into the game and started showing us things that other developers often try only to talk about. Good sports that they are, they even let us try it all out for ourselves.

Jason and Chris began by loading up the first stage in the game's three-part end level, Sweet Irene. It recreates, at least in general terms, the same sort of action featured in the movie and book -- namely, a crashed Black Hawk and the rescue of stranded soldiers. But maybe that's getting too far ahead...even if we are starting by talking about the end of the game.

The mission begins at a Delta Force camp. Transport planes sit parked in nearby hangars while jeeps drive back and forth across the runway. You're instructed to take your place along the skids of a Little Bird parked some distance away. As our soldier ran up to the helicopter, the developers pointed out that his weapon were pointed down at the ground. This is the first of many influences the SMEs have had on the project. None of them would run with their gun in the ready state, especially when that might present danger to civilians or other Delta Force operatives. For added safety therefore, you'll need to hit a key to bring up a weapon, hit it again to raise it and hit it a third time to change the rate of fire.Source:Shacknews.com

Royalty fees killing most Internet radio stations ....
Posted by [Frag-girlie] @ 11:16 AM MDT Friday, July 26, 2002 [Comment on news]

More than 200 Internet-based radio stations have shut down because of a royalty fee that takes effect in September, and more are closing daily. Most of the estimated 10,000 radio Webcasters are expected to follow suit, "with the exception of Yahoo, AOL, Microsoft and other deep-pocketed conglomerates who can afford a loss leader," says Kurt Hanson, editor of the Radio and Internet Newsletter.

I hope my bud Paligap at XGR can keep his webcast going... I'll have to check with him and let you all know what I find out.

America's Army: Operations 'Recon' Site Update....
Posted by [Frag-girlie] @ 10:54 AM MDT Friday, July 26, 2002 [Comment on news]

The America's Army: Operations 'Recon' website has been updated with news that the Marksmanship Pack is nearly complete.

"Even better, the Marksmanship Pack is packed with much, much more than just the single-player U.S. Army Sniper School missions. Responding to the feedback from our community, we've decided to add a number of additional features in this release, to include the following: tools that kick AFK players; TeamTalk options (allowing you to radio all your live and --er--'retired' team members); added green-tinted tracers to the OFPOR RPK (allowing you to distinguish between friendly and OPFOR MGs); changed the M4A1 to be fully-automatic; removed the MOUT McKenna training requirement; tightened the belt around ROE scoring (violations in the first 30 seconds will earn you an immediate 'kick' and ROE violations in the first 45 seconds doubles the penalty) and fixes for the Ghost Player and Rifle Range bugs. Oh...and one other thing, too: an In-Game Browser. Hooah! Yes, the DEV team has been busy (we let them outside at least one hour a day to stretch...) But rather than releasing these features one-by-one, we've decided to burn the midnight oil and put 'em all in one rucksack. The complete Marksmanship Pack will be ready for prime time in just a matter of days."

New World Order Interview....
Posted by [Frag-girlie] @ 1:32 PM MDT Thursday, July 25, 2002 [Comment on news]

GamersClick has posted a New World Order interview. Here's a nibblet:

GamersClick: Why did you decide to make your own gaming engine, the DVA engine?
Jim Malmros: We wanted to create a game so realistic that no other existing engine we could think of could handle the features we were aiming for. So, we started working on a very ambitious engine design of our own a couple of years back. We knew we were working on an engine that was way ahead of its time (especially when we started), but we also knew that the hardware developments would catch up with us eventually. With that I mean that by now, the hardware actually makes the features that DVA includes possible to put in a game. Still, the amount of polygons the DVA can handle for example is far greater than the hardware allows at the moment, but it already looks fantastic. It also guarantees us we can use the DVA technology for years to come. With features like per pixel lighting ans shadowing, advanced physics, advanced particle rendering and so on, we can create a very convincing gameworld for any type of game. Other DVA features, like dynamic player shadowing, will be possible for people with current generation graphic cards and plenty of RAM only. Mind you it's not the technology but still the hardware that prevents everyone from being able to run the game with everything switched on.

X10 Interview....
Posted by [Frag-girlie] @ 1:29 PM MDT Thursday, July 25, 2002 [Comment on news]

HomeLan has posted an interview with Hal Sandbach, the Project Lead on the upcoming fps X10. Here's a snip:

HomeLAN - What do you think will make x10 stand out among the crowd of other first person shooters?

Hal Sandbach - There are several elements that we're pretty excited about. Of course I'm not going to spurt them all out at this stage, but basically the game's got a very strong "survival" aspect to it. It's not something that's been seen before in a game, and certainly not in an FPS. It's one of our driving forces - to make sure the game doesn't fall into the trap of just being another FPS by the numbers. At the very beginning we knew we didn't want to just make a "more, better" kind of game, but to actually innovate. The genre needs a bit of a kick at the moment, and we want to see where we can take it with this survival slant. The emphasis is still definitely on action, but we have moved away from the completely linear experience of something like Wolfenstein. The player has a lot of choices to make, and these choices will affect how the game unfolds.

"New to the game is an Unreal Tournament-esque dual pistol mode for the humans, a rapid-fire energy weapon for the Predators, and a few new subspecies of Aliens (based on indigenous quadrupeds), along with the return of the fearsome Predalien from the first AvP. As we learned from Fincher's Alien3, the host determines an Alien's final makeup; that fast moving critter in the film was based on a doggie. So a Predalien is what happens when a Facehugger attaches to the clawed puss of a Predator. Yeah, they're nasty."

Right from the start of Resistance your thrown into situations that require thought and quick control responses, and if anything, Resistance is a lot more of a challenge than Operation Flashpoint was. Getting a perfect score in each mission is practically impossible as far as I could tell, keeping casualties to a minimum when you have tanks racing towards you and your ground troops is no easy task."

Aliens v. Predator 2: Primal Hunt Preview....

GameSpy has posted a preview of Aliens v. Predator 2: Primal Hunt. Here's their intro to get you started.

"Third Law's Primal Hunt expansion is a prequel to the events in Aliens vs. Predator 2, but they're almost identical in terms of narrative structure. Just as the full game featured a single storyline seen from three perspectives, Primal Hunt details the events leading up to Aliens vs. Predator 2, but from three different perspectives. The events began 500 years earlier with the predators ensconcing an artifact in a temple and a queen alien causing complications. When the humans arrive, the artifact then leads to the events that end up destroying part of the base in Aliens vs. Predator 2, which sets that game's events in motion with the arrival of the Colonial Marines. The result is like an elaborate Rube Goldberg device and you'll have to play all three races in both games to see the full picture."

GameSpot has posted a review of Bohemia Interactive's Operation Flashpoint: Resistance. Here's a snip:

"As with Operation Flashpoint, an interesting story ties the game's combat encounters together. Resistance plays out a few years before the story of Operation Flashpoint, letting you assume the role of Victor Troska, a former Special Forces soldier. Having grown weary of fighting, Troska retires to the sleepy, provincial island of Nogova, a fictional area that readily calls to mind the Balkans. The sympathetic Troska's peace and quiet don't last long. A split between hard-line Communists and reformers causes Nogova's government to collapse, whereupon Soviet forces led by a brutal commander arrive to establish a puppet government. Only Troska is capable of organizing and leading a militia resistance."

Medal of Honor: Allied Assault Expansion Pack....
Posted by [luckee] @ 5:14 PM MDT Saturday, July 20, 2002 [Comment on news]

the boys over at pc.ign give an hands on into the up coming expansion pack to Medal of Honor: Allied Assault. here’s a snip:

The expansion pack to Medal of Honor: Allied Assault is still in pre-alpha at this point (meaning its not really close to ready for normal human consumption) so the team wasn't showing some of the new features, but we did manage to get a few rounds of multiplayer in (winning all three rounds I played I might add) on one of the new maps and see a demo of one of the new Battle of the Bulge single player campaign levels.

MOH: AA received plenty of praise for some of its amazing single player level and scenario design. It added the fun of first person shooters with the incredible feel of being part of something bigger than you. Running up the beach at Omaha with a bunch of troops beside you getting shot and blown up was quite the stress inducer. It made you feel slightly out of control of your situation giving the tiniest hint into the horror and confusion that the soldiers running up the beach in 1944 experienced. Other missions also stuck you in point in front of a group of soldiers that you needed to care for in some sense, but also ended up helping you out in plenty of other situations.

You can read the rest here.

HomeLAN - Why did the team make the decision to move to Unreal Tournament 2003 for the next version of the mod?

ScrotcH - We decided to move to Unreal Tournament 2003 because we like a challenge. Its a totally new experience for us as we are going into the game with no prior experience in modding Unreal games. Similar to our situation 3 years ago when we started off in Quake 3 we gotta learn it all over again. The unreal engine has alot of possibilites, I for one cant wait to get my hands on its new editor.

Devastation Producer Q&A....
Posted by [Frag-girlie] @ 1:54 PM MDT Wednesday, July 17, 2002 [Comment on news]

HomeLAN has started a monthly series of Q&As with members of the Devastation development team, the upcoming Unreal engine powered first person shooter from developer Digitalo and publisher Arush Entertainment. Today's edition is a chat with Vic DeLeon, the senior producer of the game. Here's a snip:

HomeLAN - How did the idea for Devastation come about?

Vic DeLeon - Many unique and solid ideas emerge from our creative meetings, and we're in a unique position to seriously evaluate them as true opportunities. No one can ever explain *exactly* how these things come about but as I recall, Bob was tooling around with a great shooter doc called Rival Kin, which was very dark and somber. After several months, I think that design was adapted into another design for an MMORPG called Jack'd, very similar but more bubblegummy. I remember we were more excited with that one. Regardless, I think both ideas were dropped as we picked up more external projects, but some of the concepts for both original docs must have remained engrained in our heads. All that energy combined itself with other rejected concepts we initially liked, plus some ideas we could not put into the UT add-on we were working on, and a bunch of innovative ideas that were risky at the time. All this and more inexplicable stuff eventually yielded the uniquely styled, twisted and gritty world of Devastation. We funded the project independently for quite some time, and recently hooked up with ARUSH Entertainment, the publisher of the recent Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project. ARUSH will be publishing Devastation for us, and they are really great to work with.

GameSpy: How many plot paths are there? Are there multiple endings to the game based on who you're playing and what you do?
Paul Pawlicki: Like the original game, our goal in Primal Hunt is to tell the same story from three different perspectives. Each character has its own path, but at some point they will overlap with the other characters in the game. The beginning and endings of the three stories happen at different times -- it is only by playing all three that you see how it all fits together.

Action Vault has posted a review of America's Army Recon. Here's a snip:

"...Assuming one slogs through the training missions and finally succeeds in connecting to an online match, Recon reveals itself as a fine piece of software. The developers used motion capture to animate the soldiers very credibly, and they're capable of a far greater range of motions than is usual for a first-person shooter. Personnel can walk, run, sprint, crouch walk, crawl, and roll (crawling sideways fast) their way across the map, and just like in reality, they cannot shoot while sprinting or crawling with any speed. Soldiers can also communicate via hand signals - much easier than typing "go ahead" - as well as shout and whisper commands to each other on the radio..."

However, if you die and there are still teammates alive, you will then play one of them until all of your team is disposed of. If you all do die, you'll respawn at a point close to the area of your death. You must use stealth and other various tactics to eliminate sentries and terrorists to survive. Charge in like Chuck Norris and you may end up a casualty and also endanger the lives of your team."

With the inclusion of 35 realistic vehicles in addition to five different infantry kits there’s a lot to be seen and a lot to be done in 1942. Tired of the Germans? Battlefield 1942 will ship with three modes of play; A Single Player Campaign, Instant Battle and the ever so sweet Multiplayer."

XGR Goes to Commercial Radio....

WASHINGTON’S SPORTSTALK 980 AND RICHMOND’S SPORTS RADIO 910 LAUNCH “X-TREME GAMING RADIO”

WASHINGTON-- Clear Channel, the largest radio group in the United States, through its Washington, D.C. all sports station SportsTalk 980 announced the launch of the first weekly in-depth radio program devoted to video gaming – “X-treme Gaming Radio”.

Broadcast on Friday nights from 11 pm to Midnight EST (starting July 12th), after the play-by-play of the Orioles baseball games, “X-treme Gaming Radio” will cover news, reviews, interviews, and have call-ins all about the $20 billion video gaming industry. The program was created and is produced by XGR.com, the first 24/7 online radio station devoted to video gaming.

The program will also be simulcast by SportsTalk 980’s sister station in Richmond, Va., SportsTalk 910.

Contrary to most people’s beliefs, 72% of computer video gamers are over 18, with 42% over 35 years old. For console game players 58% are over 18, with 21% being over 35 years old. These are similar to the demographics of sports enthusiasts.

Over 145 million Americans play computer and video games. The video game industry generated over $9 billion in software sales in 2001, surpassing movie box office receipts for the first time.

“Paligap”, creator and host of the weekly program, commented: “We have been doing this online for almost two years and now is the time to bring this unique programming to broadcast radio. We have established a very loyal following among game enthusiasts and game developers/publishers. The fine line between video-gaming and sports is quickly disappearing. They share a similar fan base and demographics. I see this trend only growing in the future as more and more people get online and into gaming and XGR is going to be at the forefront of this new form of entertainment.”

The special guest on the first show of “X-treme Gaming Radio” will be Lieutenant Colonel (P) Casey Wardynski. Lt. Col. Wardynski is the Director of the Office of Economic and Manpower Analysis as well as being the Project Originator and Director of “America’s Army” , the just released free video game from the U.S. Army.

America's Army Preview....

PC.ign has posted a preview of America's Army. Here's a nibblet:

"Qualifications need to be undertaken. Some are necessary just to play, while others are necessary to take full advantage of all the game has to offer. Using a sniper rifle in a map first requires the completion of the sniper school, which in itself has the prerequisite of a marksman rank achieved in rifle training (something similar also applies at becoming a paratrooper). This idea of earning place and certifying abilities is cool, but may turn a lot of people off, especially in those instances like the required McKenna MOUT training, which depends heavily on functioning servers, functioning authentication servers, and a functioning team. Broken technology in a game, especially when it's just to get to the point where the bulk of the title can be enjoyed, may prove to be a bit problematic."

Mobile Forces Patch Status ....

Xeon from the Mobile Forces Community site sent along some information this morning on the Mobile Forces patch. This snip came directly from Rage:

"Rage is delighted to verify that the guys at RtW will endeavour to produce a new patch for Mobile Forces following feedback from the Mobile Forces community. Rage would like to thank RtW for their assistance and goodwill in this matter.

No release date is available at this time however we hope to confirm this over the next few days."
On a somewhat related note, there's a totally new and 'officially' endorsed Mobile Forces map is due to be released early next week. The map will be fully playable in all 8 gametypes and has been created for Realtime Worlds & Rage by a well known and respected UT community mapper - Pat 'BadKarma' Fitzsimmons. The first screenshots and map details are to be released shortly and you can bet we'll post them as soon as we get them.

New World Order Interview....

Computer and Video Games has posted an interview with Termite Games' Jokke Forsryd, where they chat about New World Order. Here's a bit from their intro:

Take Counter-Strike to the next level?! Has Swedish-based Termite Games lost its marbles? Have the brains of the development team finally frazzled after too much Abba and copious amounts of porn? Well maybe, and then again, maybe not...
A multiplayer-focussed shooter that throws in some single-player action for Mr. Billy No-Chums, New World Order, it has to be said, looks rather nice. The game has been built on Termite's in-house DVA engine, a piece of technology that uses plenty of jiggery-pokery - such as per pixel lighting, bump-mapping and dynamic lighting - to present us with some of the best environments we've ever seen.

Natural Selection First Look....

3DAction Planet has posted a first look at Natural Selection, a new Half-Life mod. Here's a snip:

"Half Life has seen its fair share of modifications, I don’t suppose there are any of you out there who haven’t heard of Counterstrike. For me, HL mods stopped with Counterstrike. When you develop a mod so successful that it becomes a boxed game in it’s own right, the modification market becomes splattered with CS wannabe’s. However, back in January of this year I heard about a mod which could possibly change First Person Shooters as we know them … I was very sceptical.

Enter Natural Selection. It’s a mod which promises an awful lot. Imagine blending Starcraft with a run of the mill First Person Shooter. It’s a difficult idea to comprehend, believe me."
