"Which is better, DeathMatch or TeamPlay?" ....
Posted by [Luckee] @ 7:30 AM MST Tuesday, October 31, 2000 [Comment on news]

Back before the days of modems and online play, all of us who were hooked by a great single player FPS game always needed more. Without any online support yet, we were stuck with downloading more maps so we could extend the game. We craved to prolong that experience of going head to head with baddies. This was what soothed our need to kill until the next step: DeathMatch! That was the next natural step from single player and what we all craved. It was still you against the baddie only now the baddie had brains, and was more unpredictable and challenging. (More @ the Source: 3dactionplanet.com)

I realize this article I wrote is a few weeks old but I'm posting it again because today is Halloween.... Now when I say Halloween would be a great first person shooter I am not talking about Duke Nukem running around a residential neighborhood blasting bag toting kiddies in plastic Poke`mon masks (although that could be fun too). I am talking about taking a movie like Night of The Living Dead, John Carpenter’s Vampires, and a dozen other good horror movies and rolling them into the ultimate first person shooter. GameCube vs. PlayStation 2 ....
Posted by [Luckee] @ 12:35 AM MST Tuesday, October 31, 2000 [Comment on news]

So... a machine that won't be released for another year is more powerful than one that got released this year. Isn't that like saying a PC from next year will blow away a PC from this year, so you must be crazy to buy one this year? I have a feeling Nintendo is just attacking the PS2 because they're watching Sony snap up their marketshare. Having a superior product isn't the only important thing - Sony beat Nintendo to the market in the first place, and cashed in on gamers waiting for the next big thing. For Halloween, we've chosen games that we feel best represent the spirit of the holiday. We looked for games that had more to them than just scary monsters. Like good ghost stories, our Halloween games combine the elements of suspense, fear, and a good plot. But because they are more than just stories, they offer an immersion that only computer games can provide. Lock your doors, turn out the lights, and take a trip with us through these frightening adventures. (More @ the Source: zdnet.com)

It makes the suspects have better marksmanship and the officers have poorer marksmanship. It lets the suspects fire at full auto. Tweak Guide For The Voodoo5....

Did you just buy that brand new 3dfx Voodoo5 and already you’re craving for more power? Well, it happened. No real tweaker will ever be completely satisfied with the speed of a video card (at least, in the near future, it seems). But first, you have to understand that what you have just purchased is 3dfx’s top of the line offering available on the market and it stands up well against other cards. So if you’re not already happy with the performance of your card, you basically have to tweak it. If you are happy with your purchase, then all is well. But if you were truly happy, would you be reading this guide? (More @ the Source: tweak3d.net)

Interview with Venom Programmer Sergey Zabaryansky....
Posted by [Luckee] @ 8:44 AM MST Monday, October 30, 2000 [Comment on news]

First of all, Venom is actually not a pure shooter. We (GSC Game World) are trying to make something different. That doesn't mean, of course, that you will not shoot a lot, but it does mean that you will have to think about tactics. The second thing is our tecnologies: perfect AI, animation techonology and physics. The player has a gun of the future. It can switch from one kind of weapon to another. Currently we have implemented only three kinds of weapons: a machine-gun, a sniper gun and something like an RPG. In addition, the player also has a mechanical spy-spider. The spider has a camera on it, so you can command it and see with its eyes. It is very useful to spy on where the patrols are situated. (More @ the Source: ga-source.com)

So here we are again, another 6 months (ok maybe 8 by now), and quite a few choices have surfaced. While all boards look pretty appetizing, there are always a few that actually stand out from the rest of the crowd. This time around it's more than 2 companies battling it out. ATI has finally caught up with them all, with the Radeon, and Nvidia pulled off another gem that goes by the name of Geforce2 MX. Matrox even came back with yet another beauty for business users, and yep, it's the G450. But one of the most impressive pieces we have here is the Kyro. Yeah Videologic is back with a card aimed at budget gaming, which actually beats the mighty GTS in some cases! This roundup will be separated into 2 parts, Power Gaming and Value Gaming, Power Gaming being the topic of today. Technological briefs of each video chip will be presented over the next pages, presenting the Nvidia GeForce2 GTS, 3dfx's Voodoo5 (VSA-100), and the Radeon from ATI. Following these briefs will be shorter reviews of products utilizing these chips. The boards were tested using Quake III(test out OpenGL capabilities) with all the settings to the max at various resolutions, 3dMark 2000 was used to test D3D capabilities, and of course various other games. "The design philosophy is relatively straightforward," Hubbard admits, adding, "at its most basic, a game must give players a goal, place obstacles in front of that goal, and provide a set of tools with which to overcome those obstacles." This description applies to everything from chess to Half-Life. "The key is to make the goal compelling, the obstacles challenging, and the tools appropriate to the task at hand. By "tools" I'm referring not only to weapons or items in the player's inventory, but also the rules that govern movement, object interaction, etc. Basically, anything the player can do." Delta Force: Land Warrior GOLD!....
Posted by [Luckee] @ 9:41 AM MDT Friday, October 27, 2000 [Comment on news]

As reported on Gone Gold... Novalogic's Delta Force: Land Warrior is golden and should be available by November 8th. Built on a new graphics engine, Delta Force: Land Warrior uses the power of today's 3D accelerator cards to produce smoother, more attractive visuals while retaining the unique advantages of the voxel-based engines that drove the original Delta Force and Delta Force 2. The result is a game that gives players the best of both worlds: the long viewing distances and vast outdoor battlefields that distinguished the first two games, plus large, complex interior environments previously unseen in a Delta Force game. Further realism is added by new weapon effects like reduced accuracy while walking or running, recoil, and even sniper scopes that are affected by a soldier's breathing. Delta Force: Land Warrior is the first title of its kind to offer an in-game save feature, a major plus, considering the complexity and "one-shot-can-kill" realism of the game's 30 missions. Also new for Land Warrior is the game's squad of five Delta Force veterans with their own diverse special abilities (heavy weapons, demolitions, sniper, close-quarters combat, etc.) that boost the game's realism and takes cooperative online play to a new level. Soldier Of Fortune, while no one ever hailed it as a next generation FPS game, had its fair few of adoring fans, as well as the obligatory critics (mostly stuffy men in suits who had never played a game before). However, a number of difficult levels do not increase the longevity much, and in the end furor died away as the people lost interest. The difference between SOF and other FPS games is the ultra high violence (-love it) and the linear gameplay design. This game assumes a "kill all or be killed" style, with no real RPG or strategy elements. SOF most definitely does not borrow from Half Life. (More @ the Source: FatGamer.com)

Gamers in the arcade range from 13 to 24, if you start at 18 and up, then the arcade business is going to take a huge hit. This could cause some businesses to close down, but it doesn’t stop here. This law is the foundation for more laws that will ban and severely regulate games. If you are over or under 18, I believe this is a violation of our 1st Amendment right and it should be stopped, before it spreads to consoles and computer games. No One Lives Forever a "Quick Take" ....

The graphics are very good, and the LithTech 2.5 engine occasionally does some fairly impressive things, but the total visual appeal still lags behind games powered with the Quake 3 engine. What are really impressive are the characters. Faces are very detailed and though there is no overall facial animation, the blinking eyes and lip-synched mouths go a long way toward making characters seem more real. The amount of animation they exhibit is a real treat, too. (More @ the Source: Computer Games Online)

Celeron vs Duron....
Posted by [NewsStaff] @ 1:13 PM MDT Tuesday, October 24, 2000 [Comment on news]

Budget processors - such as the Cyrix MII or Intel's original Celeron - were once synonymous with dog-slow performance. But that was before the price of PC technology began its downward spiral. Today's budget procs share nearly the same core architectures as their more expensive siblings and boast clock speeds that seemed unattainable just a year ago. What the welterweights lack are large L2 cache sizes and official support for fast memory buses - though you might be able to circumvent the latter problem if you're willing to dabble in the dark art of overclocking. Indeed, when push comes to shove, budget CPUs are hobbyist CPUs. Buy 'em on the cheap, tweak 'em with impunity. (More @ the Source: maximumpc.com)

Counter-Strike: Operation Cheater....

Cheating is a part of life. Always has been, always will be. Current estimates indicate that 80% of high school students actively cheat, and 95% of those students have never been caught. People cheat at gambling, cheat on their marriages, cheat on their taxes; basically, most people cheat whenever they see an opportunity to do so. Chalk it up to yet one more unflattering aspect of being human. While I expect rampant cheating in the abovementioned activities, what is really pissing me off these days is the ever-growing population of Counter-Strike cheaters. It's ruining the game and detracting from the experience for those of us who don't cheat: namely, a realistic, skilled, team-based combat atmosphere. Checkout the rest of the article here

The answer to the following odd question clarifies that the remarkable ability to render outdoor areas found in the original will not be diminished in the sequel: Mark - The Tribes2 engine supports reflections, environment mapping, detail texturing and (depending on the type of object) either static or dynamic level of detail. We skipped bump mapping this time around, but it's likely to be first on the list for the next graphics rev. The vertex and pixel shader functionality in DX8 looks really cool - certainly a feature set we'll use extensively in the next version of the engine. checkout more of the interview here

nVidia king of the hill....
Posted by [Gush] @ 6:34 PM MDT Thursday, October 19, 2000 [Comment on news]

Here is a clip about the latest press release of nVidia from CNET:

nVidia is set to overtake ATI Technologies as the biggest maker of chips that enhance graphics in the important desktop PC market, analysts and nVidia officials said. nVidia has spent the past year and a half targeting ATI's desktop business, which accounts for the majority of the graphics chips sold to Dell Computer, Compaq Computer and other big makers of personal computers. Third-quarter data on industry sales will show nVidia is the leading supplier of those products for the first time, analysts said. Since early last year, nVidia has introduced an improved chip every six months. ATI hasn't been as prolific. By the time it started selling its Radeon line in July, the company had taken almost two years to come out with a chip with a similar jump in quality.

Windows ME Review....
Posted by [Luckee] @ 12:49 PM MDT Thursday, October 19, 2000 [Comment on news]

mhzgaming.com has put up their review of Microsoft's latest OS, Windows ME. Here is more info:

This is where Windows ME does not cut it. Windows ME and gaming is pretty much Windows 98 and gaming. Simply put, there is nothing about Windows ME that will make games more enjoyable, faster, or simply better over Windows 98. Bundled with the WinME OS is a new version of DirectX v7.0 [includes DirectPlay with voice capabilities], more game troubleshooters in the help index, and that is all. Reports and benchmarks around the Internet comparing frame rates between Win98 and WinME have shown that WinME is slightly slower when running Direct3D, OpenGL, and 3dfx Glide games. For most power gamers Windows 98 is sufficient and the money is better spent on buying new games. You can acquire 2 brand new games for the price of the Windows ME upgrade.

And the info:3DActionPlanet: What are the "safe bets" for folks choosing games as a gift for someone else's kids? What games are going to be fun, yet are unlikely to cause that child's parents any concern?Craig: Heh. The easy way out here is a gift certificate. Aside from that, "E" rated games are the way to go. There are good titles (sports games, etc) that are still fun for any age. On the second half of your question, that always depends upon the parent. Someone might find Earthworm Jim offensive (maybe they have a thing against worms with intestinal problems?), even though his games are rated "E".

Tom's Hardware looks at the ATI Radeon 32MB SDRAM. Graphics cards that cost $300+ are not attractive for everyone. The main business for the end user still takes place in the price range between 150 and 200 dollars. She/he wants the best bang for the buck. ATi now offers two new versions of its Radeon series that differentiate in price from the expensive high-end card Radeon 64MB DDR. The recommended retail price for the latter is $329. Sporting with of graphics memory the 'smaller' DDR version starts at $200 and the SDR version at $150. ATi positions the DDR card for the retail market, while the SDR version comes in a white box and is officially positioned for OEMs. You will find however that most dealers will also offer the SDR card on retail shelves. Rogue Spear/Urban Ops Releases....
Posted by [Luckee] @ 2:18 AM MDT Thursday, October 19, 2000 [Comment on news]

Rogue Spear/Urban Ops Releases - Red Storm Entertainment's John Sonedecker has announced that 3D Studio Max plug-ins will be released for Rogue Spear and Urban Ops, allowing players to create custom levels for their games! Here's the release, courtesy of Rogue Spear Retreat: I am here to say that the map building tools used by the development team for Rogue Spear and Urban Ops should be released to the public in the coming weeks. I do not have an exact date, but it will be before the end of November if all goes well. I am working with a few select people to ensure that the tools are well enough documented to get aspiring map builders started as well as having them test out the package to see if I missed anything. As you can probably guess, these tools will be completely unsupported by RSE. I will be available in the Mods forum to answer as many questions as I possibly can. It is my hope that one or more fan sites will cater to the map building community and I can help make sure that they get off to a good start. Keep in mind that I, as well as any of the other level builders, will be helping out on our own time and that help may be sporadic at times. What will be included: 1. Level tagging plugin (editor) for Max 2.5 and 3.x 2. Level exporting plugin (exporter) for Max 2.5 and 3.x 3. Lighting tool to light exported levels (also used to profile levels) 4. 2 sample maps for each version of Max to show how things are done 5. At least 2 tutorials to get you started 6. Help files for the exporter, editor and lighting tool 7. Reference help file for exporter and editor 8. RSB plugins for Photoshop and ACDSee That is the basic list of what is included. As I said earlier, I am working with a few outside people to make sure that what is included is enough to get started with and understandable. I will give out more info when there is more to give out.

A recent press release from Sierra states that Ground Control: Dark Conspiracy, the upcoming official mission pack to the 3D Real-Time Strategy game Ground Control, will be available for free (with proof of purchase and a $4.95 shipping and handling fee) to owners of the original Ground Control. The add-on will have 15 single player missions as well as new multiplayer maps and a third faction. A Sierra representative stated that the mission pack will NOT be available for sale as a separate retail product, so the only way to get Dark Conspiracy at the moment is through this mail order method. Thanks to STOMPED.COM for the news.
