DESERT SEIGE

Desert Seige:  A Ghost Recon Mission Pack
By: Ubi Soft and Red Storm

Review by:  Lefty
April 27, 2002

Welcome to East Africa, the year is 2009. A sixty-year conflict boils over as Ethiopia invades its smaller neighbor Eritrea, threatening the world’s most vital shipping lanes in the Red Sea. An elite team of US Army Green Berets, known as the Ghosts, moves in to safeguard the seas and free Eritrea. As the war rages on, the Ghosts are drawn from Eritrea’s shores to the heart of Ethiopia and into their deadliest battles yet.

Ghost Recon: Desert Siege is the new mission pack to the PC Game of the Year, Ghost Recon. Desert Siege contains all of the amazing graphics and game play that made its predecessor so successful. I don’t know how, but Ubi Soft and Red Storm have actually made the artificial intelligence in Desert Siege smarter and deadlier then before. Along with the enhanced AI, the visuals found in Desert Siege are astounding, and actually superior to the ones found in Ghost Recon. Whether it be the flicker of a campfire on a group of terrorists from a hundred yards away, or the flash of a tracer as it whizzes inches from your head, I have not seen graphics this intense in any first-person shooter to date.

Already having the look and feel of a fantastic tactical shooter, Ubi and Red Storm found time to improve the sounds found in an already great sounding game. If you have a nice pair of headphones or have invested the money in a nice surround sound system, you are in for a real treat. The ability of throwing on a pair of headphones and eliminating the outside world allows for unprecedented immersion into a life like war-zone that only Ubi Soft and Red Storm can bring alive.

Along with the 8 new single player missions, Desert Siege boasts 4 new multi-player only levels. In addition to the original modes of game play, Siege has included 2 new modes, Team Based Siege and Domination, which allow teams to attack or defend specified territory. Both new modes are fully compatible with original Ghost Recon multiplayer levels. 9 new weapons have been included in the multiplayer aspect of this breathtaking game. The Bizon Submachine Gun, M98 Sniper Rifle, and the M-60 Machine Gun are just a few of the new weapons of mass destruction found within.

After spending countless hours of game play on the original Ghost Recon, I gladly welcome and applaud this new journey into the heart of the terrorist war provided by Ubi Soft and Red Storm. They have once again provided the gaming community with quality gameplay and astounding visuals that continue to impress every step of the way.
