I have always been a long time gamer and a closet "Trekkie", so I was a little hesitant as I first sat down to play Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force. I have noticed that most games in the first person genre come in two main categories, great and terrible. Once in awhile one will jump out and be mediocre. My main concern was that the game was going to take the Star Trek universe and turn it into something I couldn’t recognize as I have seen some other games do in the past. The first thing I did to allay my fears was to read about the game’s story line to see what I was getting myself into.

The game story starts as Voyager is lured into a trap. Damaged and unable to leave under it’s own power Ensign Munro and members of the newly formed "Hazard Force" commanded by Lt Tuvok are sent to save the crew and ship from bands of alien marauders and to gather information from enemy vessels to help the Voyager escape and find it’s way home.

Sounded interesting to me so I installed it and began to play. The game starts with an intro mission. At first I was a bit disappointed. Where was the cool intro screen with the story animations? How did I get where I am? Geez!! I felt cheated the game seemed to be all shooting and no story! Man was I disappointed. I decided if I was going to sit down and write a review I better at least get a few missions under my belt.

I managed to finish my first mission and was a bit surprised by what waited at the end, a big surprise followed by a cinematic story segment. (I would tell you what happened but it would ruin the surprise). It was all I could do to contain myself. What a cool ending to a mission! After the cinematic sequence the actual game intro began to play just like the introduction to an actual episode of the TV show. Now I was seeing what I wanted to see, pure Star Trek.

After the introduction, the game cut back to another cinematic story segment giving me the feeling I was really a part of the Voyager crew. After the cinematic sequence another mission started followed by yet another cinematic sequence. Wow, In the short space of three or four missions I had already faced several of the Start Trek enemies I was familiar with and a new race.

I was hooked! After a few hours of game play I was barely able to tear myself away from the game to sit down and get back to work.

I was impressed by how smooth the game ran and by how smooth the graphics were. The graphics were sharp and crisp. I was also impressed by the lighting effects in the game. From the background noise to the voices I was impressed by the sound quality. I was also impressed by the attention to detail that was put into the game, from the voices and personalities of the actors to the layout of the Voyager.

I was pleased to see the missions weren’t cut and paste, jumping from mission to mission in jumpy segments cutting out the in between stuff. Some games just imply
