Quake fans are likely to get bored with the usual sanguinary, non
strategy, fragging and gibbing commonly seen in the series. We also saw mediocre results in previous Quake series games where companies other than ID Software handled mission packs. While Quake III Arena focuses mostly on the death match concept, Team Arena focuses more on a team arena game as seen on the Unreal Tournament Game of the Year.
Along with the amazing new maps, weapons, characters, medals and power-ups, Team Arena features three new game types: One Flag
CTF, Harvester, and Overload. Here we will look into the specifics of these different game types and the new additions to the game.
New Game Types
(Team Arena)
One Flag CTF - In order to score a point, your
team needs to grab the white flag in the Arena’s center and carry it to the
enemy’s flag base. Again, unless a flag bearer dies over the Void or in Fog of
Death, the flag remains where it is dropped.
Harvester - Every time a player on either team is fragged, a crystal skull of
their team color pops out of the skull generator in the center of the Arena.
Players pick up and carry the skulls of the opposing team color and remove their
own team’s from play by running through them. To score captures, players must
carry the skulls to their enemy’s goal. When a player is fragged, any carried
skulls are lost.
Overload - The goal of an Overload scenario is to destroy the skull portion of
the enemy’s goal obelisk. It turns red as it soaks up damage. When it
explodes, your team scores a point. The skull constantly regenerates at a rate
of 15 hit points per second.
New Weapons (Team Arena)
Chain Gun - The withering fire of the Chaingun
chews through flesh and armor with equal ease. Gladiators using this weapon
should keep an eye out for ammo boxes, however, as it’s high rate of fire
burns them up fast.
Nail Gun - Using a linear accelerator to hurl a cloud of deadly spikes at
incredible speeds, the Nailgun makes up for relatively poor accuracy by simply
hitting everything in and around its target. If there’s anything more
satisfying than turning an enemy gladiator into a human (or inhuman) pincushion
with this weapon, science has yet to discover it.
Prox Launcher - One of the most diabolical weapons in the Arena Eternal, this
device flings out a mine that uses a gravitic anchor to fasten itself to any
surface. Once in place, it patiently waits for the enemy to step into its sensor
grid and set it off. There is no better way to booby-trap an area than with a
Prox Launcher.
